Ariana Grande’s Moonlight — Everything We Know So Far
Ariana Grande has been keeping pretty tight-lipped when it comes to the concrete details of her upcoming third album, Moonlight, though she hasn’t been so shy about dropping cryptic hints on social media over the past few months.
Here’s everything we know (so far) about Ariana Grande’s much anticipated new album.
Victoria Monet is heavily involved
Grande has dropped several hints about Moonlight on social media since she first hit the studio in the summer, with the majority of cryptic posts including singer/songwriter Victoria Monet.
It sounds like the twosome got on like a house on fire during the album process, as Ariana tweeted to her more than 34 million followers on April 9 that she has “made a really cool song” with Monet and producer/songwriter Tommy Brown. Calling them “two of my best friends,” Ariana added that she was “on a high” after laying down a particularly special track she wrote with Victoria, adding that she’s “in love” with the mystery song.
Moonlight features Ariana’s “favorite song ever”
Grande revealed in a Snapchat post back in November that she was still in the studio for Moonlight and admitted that she was “working on [her] favorite song ever today of all time [sic].” Ariana later took to Twitter to confirm the recording session, writing on the social media site that November 17 had been “the most musically inspired day of [her] life.”
Charlie Puth may have written for the album
Speaking to Billboard last month, “Marvin Gaye” singer Charlie Puth revealed that he’s been writing music for Ariana’s upcoming release. Telling the music website in November that he’s writing for Ariana “right now,” he added that there are “a lot of interesting things are coming together.”
There’s (probably!) a violin involved
Ariana dropped a pretty big hint about her new album on Instagram back in May when she posted a short video of herself hitting the studio with Victoria and musician Peter Lee Johnson. Grande wrote on the social media site that she was “having withdrawals” from her recording sessions, and captioned the video with a moon emoji.
It’s “personal” and may feature a track about Big Sean
According to Capital FM, Grande admitted shortly after splitting from rapper Big Sean that Moonlight features a song that was inspired by “this boy” she had previously been dating. “It’s about this very cute night we had together,” Grande told the radio station of the song back in June, confessing that the music on Moonlight is the “most personal music I’ve ever written.”
Moonlight also features a song called “Moonlight”
In a direct Twitter message Ariana sent to a fan in May, the “Focus” singer confirmed that “Moonlight” is in fact the title of a new song as well as the upcoming album. Though Grande didn’t confirm that “Moonlight” the song would definitely be featured on the collection, she did go into a little more detail regarding the song with another fan on the 140 character site.
“It’s a song I wrote with Victoria [Monet] one night that is [very] near and dear to my heart,” Grande allegedly wrote in a separate direct message according to PopCrush. Ariana also allegedly told the fan that “Moonlight” is both her “favorite” and the “most special” song she’s recorded.
It’s “scary, vulnerable and terrifying”
Those are the three words Ariana used to describe Moonlight in an interview with V Magazine earlier this year. Grande told the site that the collection, which is rumored to hit shelves in January 2016, “is very honest and special” and added to the magazine that her upcoming album “is the most personal music she’s made, by far.” Grande also revealed in the candid interview that she’s “very proud” and “very excited” to release new music.
