Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello Opens Up About Relationships, Denies Shawn Mendes Dating Rumors
Fifth Harmony singer Camila Cabello is keeping her love life private following her high-profiled relationship with Austin Mahone.
Camila Cabello, 18, briefly dated Austin Mahone back in 2014 before they went their separate ways. Mahone has since been linked to Becky G and mystery girl Amanda Gonz, while Cabello has been linked to up-and-coming singer Shawn Mendes. She revealed to Teen Vogue that her relationship with the heartthrob made her realize that she doesn’t want to be so public about her romantic relationships.
“I’ve learned that I don’t want to be as open or public about relationships anymore. In my first relationship, I thought I could hold on to the normalcy of just being like ‘Yeah, we’re dating’, just like if it were high school and I was telling my friends. But in high school, there aren’t articles written everywhere when you break up and you don’t have everyone in the school coming up to you and asking what happened or sharing their opinion with you. It didn’t feel like ours anymore, it felt like everybody else’s.”
Camila revealed that she has moved on these days. The Fifth Harmony singer says she’s dated a few guys that no one knows, but she’s not going to post pictures of her dates on social media. But if Camila was in a long-term relationship with the lucky guy, then she would be willing to share posts about them on social media.
The singer also revealed that her new single, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” with singer Shawn Mendes was actually inspired by a cheating ex-boyfriend. Who? We’ll never know, because Cabello loves that her fans don’t know who she’s singing about these days.
“The song is about cheating. Two days before we wrote this song, I found out from a friend of mine that the boy I was ‘talking to’ was also talking to other girls. The line ‘can’t seem to let you go/can’t seem to hold you close’ was about that weird period when you find out you’re being played but haven’t said anything to him yet and it’s awkward and distant. In the song, as the ‘cheater,’ I put myself in that guy’s perspective. A few days after we wrote the song, I told him I couldn’t do it anymore.”
Camila Cabello has previously denied the relationship rumors hounding her and Mendes. Earlier this month, both singers told Entertainment Tonight at KIIS FM’s iHeartRadio Jingle Ball in Los Angeles that they’re not dating. They’re just best friends, no matter what the rumor mill claims to say.
But she didn’t appear to be bothered by the question in her Teen Vogue interview. She said that she doesn’t read or listen to the rumors that spread. In the interview, Cabello also revealed that Shawn knows what it’s like to be a true friend in an industry that’s probably riddled with fake friendships and even faker relationships. She knows that she can rely on the “Stitches” singer every time she’s feeling low. In fact, he’s the type of guy who makes other people feel good about themselves.
Camila Cabello’s recent collaboration with Shawn Mendes also had fans wondering if she’s leaving Fifth Harmony behind. The X Factor winners are now working on their second studio album. Camila confirmed during a backstage interview at the KIIS FM Jingle Ball Concert that they’re almost done recording. She added that 5H will release a new single soon, which has quickly become her favorite.
