‘The Vampire Diaries’ Star Ian Somerhalder Celebrates His 37th Birthday Promoting His Foundation, But Where Is Wife Nikki Reed?

Although he plays an immortal vampire on The Vampire Diaries, some fans may be surprised to learn that Ian Somerhalder is not actually ageless. In fact, the actor recently celebrated his 37th birthday. In honor of reaching this milestone, Somerhalder posted a short photo of him on his Instagram account. While nothing seemed out of the ordinary in regards to Somerhalder’s birthday, his wife, Nikki Reed, was mysteriously absent from the photo. Is something going on behind the scenes?

The photo included a shot of Somerhalder against the backdrop of a lake. True to form, Somerhalder used his birthday as an opportunity to promote environmental awareness and his organization, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF).

“ISF and my birthdays are here and I find myself reflecting on the past 5 years and how far we’ve come together,” the actor wrote alongside the image. “Please visit http://www.isfoundation.com/campaign/my-birthday-wish-our-dream. I’d like to share some special footage and an exciting announcement with you.”

While Somerhalder took the time to bring awareness to environmental concerns, it is interesting to note that he made no mention of his wife. In fact, according to Venture Capital Post, Reed’s own activity on social media did not even hint that Somerhalder had celebrated a birthday. Is this an indication that their relationship is going through a bit of a rough cycle?

According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, the couple have recently been under a lot of heat concerning their marriage. In particular, the two are apparently fighting over Somerhalder’s desire to start a family, which is something Reed is not ready to do just yet.

The family issue is something that has plagued Ian Somerhalder in past relationships. This includes his previous romance with former Vampire Diaries co-star Nina Dobrev. Apparently, Somerhalder wanted kids, but Dobrev was not at a point in her career where she was ready to start having babies. Eventually, the two broke up, and Somerhalder moved on to marry Reed.

That being said, Somerhalder has not been silent in regards to revealing the details of his marriage to the former Twilight star. In a recent interview with WGNO, Somerhalder explained just what his marriage to Reed truly means to both his personal and professional lives.

For starters, Somerhalder told the outlet how grateful he is to have someone like Reed in his life. In particular, Somerhalder revealed that the success he has enjoyed in acting is largely due to her support and that the value he places on Reed is something that cannot be measured.

Furthermore, Somerhalder went on to state how he is very supportive of his wife’s career in the entertainment industry, including her part in the TV series Sleepy Hollow. While Somerhalder did not come right out and admit it, his comments are clearly an attempt at a rebuttal against all the reports that he wants Reed to put her career on hold and start a family.

However, given Somerhalder’s recent birthday celebrations and the fact that Reed did not so much as acknowledge that her husband was turning 37, there may be something to the rumors that their marriage is undergoing some difficult challenges. Is his desire to start a family beginning to drive the two apart?

Of course, Reed’s failure to mention her husband’s birthday could mean nothing. After all, it is possible that she just didn’t want to share her feelings on social media.

Whatever the truth behind the rumors, at least Somerhalder and Reed share a passion for environmental activism. Perhaps this is enough to keep their marriage going strong, but only time will tell if things don’t work out between the two stars.
