Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek, Christian Slater, And Others React To Golden Globe Nominations

On Thursday, Mr. Robot received three nominations for the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, which will air January 10, 2016. This television series, created by Sam Esmail, stars Rami Malek, who plays a paranoid druggie who also happens to be a computer programming genius-turned vigilante hacker.

It appears that his performance in a profound role may just earn him a Golden Globe award in 2016 for Best Actor in a Drama Series. He’s running up against Jon Hamm from Mad Men, Bob Odenkirk from Better Call Saul, Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones, and Kevin Spacey from House of Cards.

Surprisingly, when the L.A. Times asked Malek about his nomination, he cited his time on the set of Gilmore Girls, in which he played a tiny role. He stated the following.

“It’s funny, I can find myself sometimes being too quiet. A lot of sound people tell me that I have to raise my volume. I think that’s because I studied theater for a while. And on ‘Gilmore Girls,’ I was wondering why people were talking so quietly. I quickly realized there were microphones involved and I didn’t have to yell. It stuck with me a little bit too much. Sometimes I’m just whispering.”

In addition, he stated that he doesn’t really identify personally with his character. However, that doesn’t seem to matter much, since his role got him a nomination for one of the most prestigious roles in film.

“It says a lot that I got to play a lead in this show and now I’m getting recognition for it as a nominee,” he continued. “I think there are a lot of actors in the Screen Actors Guild who can relate to feeling like the underdog. Elliot is a guy who is deeply complicated and can go to really dark places. I’m just happy I get to see where he goes next.”

Christian Slater, who also stars in Mr. Robot, had his own things to say.

“This is an extraordinarily talented team of people,” he told EW. “Sam Esmail is just a great writer, who seems to have his finger on the pulse or maybe possesses some crystal ball, because he really had a great insight into this subject matter and was able to add a layer of realism and depth and humanity to a subject that a lot of people didn’t understand. I think it’s wonderful that this show has provided a window into that world.”

Other actors and actresses took to Twitter to express their excitement to their nominations.

Lady Gaga was nominated for a Best Actress award for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel. She tweeted that her excitement might be so loud it would bother her neighbors.

Gaga is going up against Kirsten Dunst (Fargo), Sarah Hay (Flesh and Bone), Felicity Huffman (American Crime), and Queen Latifah (Bessie).

Mark Ruffalo seemed a little surprised about his nomination for Best Actor for his role in Infinitely Polar Bear.

Ruffalo’s fellow contenders include Christian Bale (The Big Short), Matt Damon (The Martian), Steve Carell (The Big Short), and Al Pacino (Danny Collins).

Game of Thrones also tweeted a quick message after receiving a nomination for Best TV series.

Other Best TV Series nominees include Empire, Mr. Robot, Outlander, and Narcos, a Netflix original.

And, of course, we know Amy Schumer isn’t going to be quiet about her Best Actress nomination for her role in Trainwreck.

Schumer will be going head to head with other actresses, including Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van), and Lily Tomlin (Grandma).

Eddie Redmayne, who has been making some impressive waves in the world of cinema, was recognized by the filmmakers of The Danish Girl. Redmayne was nominated for Best Actor while his co-star, Alicia Vikander, received a Best Actress nomination.

Redmayne’s contenders include Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Will Smith (Concussion), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs).

Vikander is actually being nominated for two different performances. Her fellow nominees for Best Actress include Brie Larson (Room), Rooney Mara (Carol), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), and Saoirse Ronana (Brooklyn). Vikander also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress and is going up against such iconic stars as Jane Fonda (Youth), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs), and Helen Mirren (Trumbo).

This year’s nominations will come to fruition on January 10, 2016, on NBC. Ricky Gervais is hosting, and it will be him that announces whether Mr. Robot and the actors in that realm have won a Golden Globe.
