Meryl Davis Congratulates Maksim Chmerkovskiy And Peta Murgatroyd On Engagement, Karina Smirnoff Remains Publicly Mum

One person who is very happy that Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd are now engaged is Maks’ former Dancing with the Stars partner Meryl Davis. On Sunday, Meryl tweeted her congratulations to the couple.

Meryl called both Maks and Peta “beautiful souls.” She also called the proposal beautiful.

Some people commended Meryl on publicly congratulating Maks and Peta considering her past with Maks. Meryl, an Olympic gold medalist ice dancer, won Season 18 of Dancing with the Stars with Maks. During the season, Meryl and Maks showed a lot of chemistry on the dance floor. so much chemistry in fact that there was a lot of speculation that they were dating in real life. Judging by some of the responses to Meryl’s tweet, it seems that some of her fans still believe that she and Maks had a real romance and that she, not Peta, should be the one with Maks.

In an interview with Social Life magazine in June 2014, about a month after he and Meryl won the trophy ball, Maks pretty much said that what he had with Meryl was a “showmance.”

“Do you know what a showmance is? It is like being at a summer camp when you’re a teenager. You spend summertime away from your home. When you spend three months very closely with someone at a particular place, it is like a summer love. You have no choice but to get involved with that person.”

Yet Maksim Chmerkovskiy also made clear that he did have something special with Meryl Davis. He said that he’s not sure he can ever return to the show as a competitor because he knows he’ll never get someone like Meryl again.

“I want Meryl to be the last person I dance with, the last person I got to be passionate with and care so much for.”

Maks also told Social Life that he’s ready for children. Perhaps he and Peta will be having a child together soon now that they’re engaged? On Saturday, Maks revealed on social media that he asked Peta to marry him and she said yes. He posted a photo of himself on his knees holding out a ring to a crying Peta. The proposal came at the end of a Sway show in Miami.

People reported that Maks told Peta, whom he dated for about 10 months in 2012 and 2013 and got back together with earlier this year, that he wants to be in love with her for the rest of her life.

“I’m in love with you and I want to be in love with you for the rest of my life. Will you marry me?”

Meryl witnessed the proposal since she stars in Sway alongside Maks and Peta. The touring dance show also stars Maks’ brother, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Rumer Willis, with whom Val won season 20 of Dancing with the Stars with, and Tony Dovolani. Maks’ proposal photo shows the other dancers cheering him on as he proposed to Peta.

Not only is Meryl on tour with Maks and Peta, she’s apparently good friends with them. Peta has posted photos and videos of herself hanging out with Meryl to her Instagram page. One video shows Peta, Meryl and Rumer goofing off to a song backstage.

Before Peta Murgatroyd, Maksim Chmerkovskiy was actually engaged to another dancer from Dancing with the Stars. He was engaged to Karina Smirnoff for about nine months in 2009. Back then, People quoted sources as saying that Maks and Karina’s differing timelines on when to have children, as well as family disapproval, played a part in the split. So far, Karina has not publicly commented on her social media pages on Peta and Maks’ engagement.
