As the summer heats up, many home owners are complaining of higher than the normal power bills.
One Texas mom’s cries were justified, however, as she was shocked to get a bill from her electric company for a whopping $$1,381,783.92.
“I opened it. I read it. Then just went, ‘Oh, my gosh. That’s a lot of money,” Kristin Harriger of Abilene, Tex. told the Abilene Reporter News.
At first, Harriger, a single mother whose electric bill normally is in the $100 range, thought the statement was a joke and even shared photos of it with her friends via text messaging.
Wanting to fix the situation though (and dodge a reported $66,000 late fee), Harriger phoned her utility company, Potentia Energy, where representatives readily admitted it was a error on their part and promised it would be corrected immediately.
“It was either computer error or human error, they said. They said they would look into it, and send me a new bill right away,” she said.
As for the mix-up, Business Insider reports that rather than charging the usual $0.09 per kilowatt hour (kWh), Harriger had been billed 100,000 cents ($1,000) per kwh.
“I’m glad I didn’t have autopayments,” Harriger joked after the incident.
