Adele Smashes Sales Records In First Week
“Hello” has been a big hit since Adele first released the single ahead of her upcoming release of her album 25. It should be no surprise that 25 has been a huge success and have smashed sales records. Adele’s album 25 smashes records world wide, in it’s first week of sales. Sales records were recorded in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand.
According to Reuters Adele smashes the U.S. record by selling 3.38 million copies of Adele’s 25 album in the first seven days. In a time when it is rare that an artist sells 1 million copies, Adele has seen great success in her latest release. Adele has out sold artist such as Britney Spears, Eminem, Lady Gaga, and Whitney Houston who have all had albums debuted at over 1 million copies.
The previous record holder was No Strings Attached by the popular boy band *NSYNC. The record was set in 2000, the first week of sales had 2.42 million copies sold in the U.S. It has taken 15 years for the record to be broken and Adele surpassed it by nearly 1 million units. Adele broke the record after the first four days of sales for 25.
David Bakula, senior vice president of insights at Nielsen Music, commented on how impressive Adele’s records sales are for its time.
“Back in 2000 when *NSYNC set the record for album sales in a week, the album was the dominant form of music consumption. In 2000, there were 785 million albums sold in the U.S. and in 2015 we will likely see around 250 Million albums sold. Albums are [now] just a portion of the total consumption of music and to see an artist sell this many albums in a week is a feat that surpasses all expectations.”
According to Stuff Adele records sales smashes New Zealand’s record with it debuting at 18,000 records for the first week. The previous record-holder was Britain’s Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle, with her 2009 debut I Dreamed A Dream, which sold 17,435 records in New Zealand. Adele album breaks the record by over a thousand units.
In August of 1997, Oasis set the record in the U..K with the album Be Here Now, which had 695 thousand units sold. According to International Business Times, Adele smashes that record with 25, selling 800,000 units in the first week. It, however, is a complicated record, back in 1997 the album was released on a Thursday giving a total of three day registered sales while Adele has a full seven days.Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company also commented on Adele’s record breaking sales.
“The massive impact of 25 this week marks the moment that Adele has transformed herself from a phenomenon of our age to an all-time great. The statistics surrounding the album are staggering, topped by the simple fact that no album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach number one in the history of British music.”
Adele sales can be attributed to the album not being made available on any streaming services, which is one of the most popular options for listening to music today. Adele’s total sales is still an impressive number as the previous record was made in a time when streaming services were not the main source of music.
After convincing fans that she might be too tired for a tour Adele has since set her tour dates. Currently Adele’s tour is set for U.K. and Europe starting next year. It will kick off in Belfast in February and visit Dublin, Manchester, London, Glasgow and Birmingham and move on to mainland Europe. There is no word on a tour for the U.S. at this time.
