‘Dexter’ Returns — To Twitter

Dexter returned this week, to everyone’s surprise, when the Dexter official Twitter account posted a cheeky Thanksgiving themed tweet.

As anyone who follows the Dexter Twitter account would know, the only updates usually posted are retweets from the Dexter game Twitter account, or advertisements for their Dexter-branded merchandise.

So when this original Thanksgiving tweet was posted this week, with the claim that “His knife’s freshly sharpened,” Dexter fans started wondering if this was leading to news of a possible Dexter reboot.

For those who don’t know, Dexter was a dark TV show that had just enough humor to make it perfect. It was about Dexter Morgan, a brilliant blood spatter expert who solved crimes during the day and committed them at night, ridding the world of the evil and the guilty in a way only he could. Played by Michael C. Hall, the character was perfectly captured, and according to CarterMatt, the show is ideal for a reboot, particularly because it is in need of redemption.

“Dexter is a show in need of redemption. We know that not every event from the series finale can be undone (Deb is still dead), but there is a chance to go forward and tell a story of how Dexter Morgan should either really pay for what he did, or actually wash his hands and move forward. No purgatory, and no half-measures.”

A Dexter return has been considered quite seriously by Showtime. ScreenCrush reports that the head of Showtime, David Nevins, recently spoke at the TCA press tour panel. He not only discussed several possible new series, but commented on the idea of resurrecting old favorites. Dexter was one of those favorites.

“Dexter is the one show that I would think about [continuing]. It’s a question of when the timing is right. If there’s a willingness to do it, I would certainly listen. Certainly I’d look at Dexter.”

ScreenCrush also reported that in an earlier comment made in January, Nevins said that a reboot of Dexter would require Michael C. Hall.

“It would have to involve Michael. I would only do it with Michael… It remains to be seen if they’re going to want to do it, if I’m going to want to do it. They never felt like killing Dexter is the right end. I think that show is that character. If we were to do it, I would want to do Dexter in a new concept and configuration. I would want the show to feel different and not just be a continuation of the old show.”

If not a direct reboot, then perhaps a Dexter spinoff might be more appropriate. According to A.V. Spinoff, the concept of a Dexter spinoff was around before the show ended. Nevins has spoken of a spinoff before, saying that he couldn’t just do a straight continuation of the original show.

“It would have to feel like it’s a new show. I’m not interested in doing it if it’s just a continuation.”

The genius behind Dexter was show creator Tim Schlattmann, who has also written for the shows Roseanne, Smallville, and Get Real. The Antelope reports that one of Schlattmann’s proudest moments of his career was receiving a nomination from the Writer’s Guild of America for the script “The Dark Defender,” which was from the second season of Dexter.

“Only six scripts are nominated for the entire broadcast year, so that was quite an acknowledgement from my fellow writers. I’m also very proud that we brought Dexter Morgan to Kearney for a kill. Trust me, it was not an easy feat to find cornfields in Southern California.”

Dexter certainly was a well-loved show that inspired as well as entertained. According to Bandwidth, Ardamus, a rapper from Fort Totten, named one of his songs “Jordan Chase,” the name of a villain in Dexter. Ardamus revealed how powerful he considered Jordan Chase.

“I thought Jordan Chase was one of those get-away-with-it types of people. He had power and he controlled masses of people. I thought that was a powerful statement.”

Fans can only hope they will once again see Dexter on the small screen. In the meantime, they can listen to Ardamus’ song and watch reruns of the original series. See the Dexter Season 1 trailer here.
