Zayn Malik Trashes One Direction: Their Music Is ‘Generic As F**k’

Former One Direction star Zayn Malik has not bitten the hand that fed him. Instead Malik has chopped that hand off and fed it to the wolves. Back in March of this year Malik walked out on One Direction just a handful of shows into their mammoth “On The Road Again” world tour. One Direction fans were heartbroken when Malik walked out on the chart-topping band, but Directioner’s are a loyal bunch, and most tried to understand Zayn’s reasons for quitting. In fact most of Malik’s fans did not blame Zayn at all. Instead they turned their ire on Malik’s former friend, record producer Naughty Boy.

When Malik walked out on One Direction, fans were told that he was suffering from stress and needed a rest. After returning to England, Malik was spotted in the studio with Naughty Boy and then, just days later, Zayn announced that he was quitting One Direction for good.

Now, in an interview with Fader magazine that is sure to shock One Direction fans, Malik has revealed that he wanted out of One Direction from the beginning and that he doesn’t even like their music. In essence Malik admits that he lived a lie for the entire time he was a member of One Direction.

“I just wanted to go home from the beginning. I was always thinking it. I just didn’t know when I was going to do it.”

According to The Sun, Malik admits that he woke up in Hong Kong on the morning of March 19, had a chat with his cousin, and simply decided he was going home. It seems that contractual obligations and loyalty to the bandmates and management team who had brought him success, riches, and worldwide recognition meant absolutely nothing to Malik, who simply packed his bags and went home. Clearly the millions of fans who bought tickets to see One Direction didn’t enter Zayn’s mind either.

“It just felt right on that day. I woke up on that morning and was like, ‘I need to go home. I just need to be me now, because I’ve had enough.’

“I was with my little cousin at the time — we were sat in the hotel room — and I just said, ‘Should I go home?’ And he was like, ‘If you want to go home, let’s go home.’ So we left.”

According to Daily Mail, Malik even told Fader that he hated One Direction‘s music. Malik also claims that there was no room for him to experiment within the band, as the management wanted to produce a formulaic sound that they knew the group’s young fans would like. Malik slams One Direction’s music as “generic as f**k” and says that he would never listen to it.

“That’s not music that I would listen to. Would you listen to One Direction, sat at a party with your girl? I wouldn’t. To me, that’s not an insult, that’s me as a 22-year-old man. As much as I was in that band, and I loved everything that we did, that’s not music that I would listen to.”

Malik’s comments about One Direction will doubtless leave many wondering why Zayn stuck around for such a long time. If Malik hated the music he was making, where was his artistic integrity?

According to the Guardian Malik claims that “there was just a general conception that the management already had what they want for the band, and I just wasn’t convinced with what we were selling.” Malik seems desperate to distance himself from One Direction as he prepares to release solo material.

It seems that Malik’s new material will be a crossover between R & B and garage music, some of it recorded in a tent in Los Angeles. One has to wonder if Malik has forgotten that his time with One Direction has made him a very wealthy young man and given him the freedom to push his career in whichever way he desires.
