Is Madonna Really Plagiarizing Taylor Swift On Her ‘Rebel Heart Tour’?

Madonna has always been an innovator who started many trends — or at least she made underground trends mainstream. If you are to believe some of the headlines, Madonna has fallen behind and is “copying” Taylor Swift now. The fact that Madonna brings special guest stars on stage is enough to rile up the haters.

The New York Post, a source that seems to have it out for Madonna and the Rebel Heart Tour, was one of the first to accuse Madonna of plagiarism for inviting another star on stage with her.

“Even though the tour is barely two months old, Madonna has already clocked up a solid honor roll of special guests that mirrors Taylor Swift and her giant ‘1989’ jaunt, which kicked off in May. Although Swift invites someone from the pop world to make a cameo virtually every night, Madonna is smartly doing what she can to keep up and ensure the ‘Rebel Heart’ tour remains a regular trending topic.”

Some of the guests Madonna has brought up on stage during her performance of “Unapologetic Bi***” include Amy Schumer, Katy Perry, and Anderson Cooper. USA Today talks about the guest Madonna brought up on stage this past weekend.

“Taylor Swift isn’t the only one to host A-list guest stars. Jessica Chastain let her inner wild child loose on Saturday night to join Madonna on stage during her concert in Prague — even giving her Madgesty a spanking! The Academy Award-nominated actress seemed pretty pleased with herself, posting a video on her Facebook page and writing, ‘I gave Madonna a spanking & Ive a video to prove it. ?#?rebelheart? ?#?unapologeticbi***?.'”

Before people want to accuse Madonna of copying Taylor Swift, less than 10 seconds of research would show that Madonna has brought special guests up on stage long before Taylor Swift has.

Britney Spears performed live with Madonna at Dodgers Stadium in 2008. However, Britney Spears wasn’t the first special guest Madonna invited up on stage that year.

Six months prior to Britney appearing with Madonna, the Queen of Pop brought Justin Timberlake on stage to perform their hit single “4 Minutes.” So, does this mean Taylor Swift is copying Madonna? The answer is a loud “No!” Performers surprising their audiences by bringing up another performer on stage has been happening long before Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour or Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour.

Some examples: Bruce Springsteen has constantly brought up Sting on stage. The Rolling Stones have brought out U2 to perform with them. It should be mentioned that Paul McCartney has brought up just about every other rock star in the world to perform with him. So, what’s the difference. Well, of course, they are all men.

Sexism in the music industry and entertainment industry remains severe. Instead of celebrating Taylor Swift and Madonna as top-tier female artists, many would just rather pit them against each other. There is ageism involved as well. You see, if Madonna brings up a younger performer, she must be “desperate to remain relevant.” If Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, or Katy Perry brings up a legend on stage, the media will pit them against each other, but would never use the word “desperate” to describe their smart branding efforts.

It’s also important to note that Madonna has brought up a small amount of celebrities on stage during her Rebel Heart Tour when compared to the amount of fans she brings up. Madonna has been known to be ice cold during her previous tours, which has always worked for her. However, she is a lot more warm now. However, Madonna should be prepared for the next headline: “Madonna Copies Katy Perry By Singing Into A Microphone.”
