Tyshawn Lee: 9-year-old Executed In Chicago, Revenge Killing Due To Lee’s Father’s Ties To Gang [Video]
Tyshawn Lee was executed in Chicago on Monday afternoon due to the fact that Tyshawn’s father had ties to a gang. The gang conflict that resulted in the death of Tyshawn is between the Gangster Disciples and the Black P Stones. Tyshawn’s father, Pierre Stokes, is said to be a member of the Gangster Disciples. Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy states that the murder of Tyshawn Lee was “probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime” that he has seen in his career.
Tyshawn was on his way to his grandmother’s house on Monday afternoon. He never made it there. Police state that Lee was somehow lured into an alley where gang members opened fire on the child. Gunshot wounds were found on the head and back of Lee. Tyshawn’s father was questioned about whether our not he knew who murdered his son, but he refused to cooperate with police according to Garry McCarthy’s statement to the media.
“I don’t think he’s a witness to it, so I’m not sure how he could help us, but I could tell you this, I’m a father, many of us here are fathers. My reaction would be a little bit different.”
After McCarthy’s press conference, Stokes was approached by some reporters and was asked to respond to what the Chicago Police Superintendent had just said.
“No, I don’t think it was no retaliation because I never did nothing to — for nobody to hurt my son.”
Stokes does not understand why Tyshawn would have been targeted by a rival gang. Stokes told reporters earlier this week that he is always outside and that if a rival wanted to hurt him then they could have. Stokes also mentioned to reporters that he was upset with the direction of the investigation into Tyshawn’s death by the Chicago police department.
“They’re more worried about me. Why are you worried about me, not the killer? I’m not the killer. Worry about the killer.”
The Chicago police have many leads that they are investigating as to who killed Tyshawn Lee. As of now, police lack the evidence to make an arrest in the case.
“We’re pretty certain that we know exactly how it occurred. We know when it occurred. We’re pretty certain that we even know the individuals involved. But we need a little bit more to make sure that (an arrest) happens.”
A reward has been increased from $20,000 to $35,000 for information that leads to an arrest for the murder of Tyshawn.
Police believe that Lee’s murder is part of a series of gang violence between the Gangster Disciples and the Black P Stones going back to August. It is speculated that Tyshawn was murdered because his father, Stokes, is believed to have killed two members of the Black P Stones. Deputy Chief Fred Waller used to be a patrolman in the area where Tyshawn was murdered. Waller commented on the frustration and sadness that he has in this latest bought of gang violence in Chicago.“The (Gresham) District is my home and I’ve never seen anything like this, so the frustration runs deep. All the officers, everybody is working doubly hard trying to find any type of leads or anything that we can do to try to solve this heinous crime.”
Murders and shootings in Chicago this year are almost 20 percent higher than they were from last year. In the Gresham District, shootings have increased by 32 percent.
Is the brutal death of Tyshawn Lee a sign that gangs are now going to target defenseless family members of their rivals?
