‘Grimm’ Actor David Giuntoli Reveals A Darker, Solo Path
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Grimm.
Grimm is just beginning its darkest chapter yet with season 5, and while Nick Burkhardt, played by David Giuntoli, is reacting to the violent death of his once beloved Juliette Silverton (Bitsie Tulloch), David says Nick has been traveling a progressively darker path with each new season.

While Nick has always leaned toward the darker paths in Grimm, David says that his character will be the darkest he has ever been in season 5 and will be bent upon seeking revenge upon those he blames for Juliette’s death. It isn’t just Juliette’s death that is keeping Giuntoli’s character focused on vengeance in Grimm, David reminds Grimm fans, as he points out that Kelly Burkhardt’s head was delivered to Nick in a box.
There is really only one thing keeping Nick from going completely dark in Grimm, suggests Giuntoli in a Blastr interview. Nick is only tethered to the light by his baby, given to him through his once mortal enemy, Adalind Schade (Claire Coffee).
“The new baby is in tremendous danger,” Giuntoli says. “Nick, basically, wants to take it into a bunker with him and Adalind. And you will see that maybe we do. I want to get out of the house. My priority is I want to keep this baby safe. And the best way to do that is to pack up and leave. Get the hell out of Dodge.”
It all really goes back to the season 4 finale for the Grimm star, and for his co-stars as well, with the writers pulling out all of the stops. The entire seasonal event left the Grimm actors wondering just who was expendable, says the Grimm actor.
“It was funny. It was as if the writers were writing for a [series] finale,” admits David Giuntoli. “And I could sense that they were really ramping up the drama and the stakes. It felt like no character was safe. And all the actors were like, ‘We’re going to die. See you guys… never.'”
As scary as that idea is for the actors, David says the idea that no character is safe makes for a much more compelling series and he thinks that’s just what makes Grimm such a big draw, aside from the darker take on fairy tales for which Grimm has become so famous.
David Giuntoli Reveals That Season 5 Will Be A Reboot With A New Big Threat

The Grimm writers have mostly done away with the royals, says Giuntoli, making room for an entirely new big, bad threat and, as the Grimm actor reveals, this new villain may be an even bigger danger to Nick and to his friends than anything they have previously faced. This new threat leaves a unique calling card: claw scratches on the wall.
Grimm, like many supernatural dramas, established the rules for the show early on, so fans could follow along with the same knowledge that the Grimm understands to be true. One of those rules has been that most of the Wesen try to keep from leaving evidence of their existence and that those responsible for cleaning up the messes that do occasionally result also do what they can to make sure humankind doesn’t become wise to the truth.
Grimm‘s Giuntoli says that the status quo will be upset in a big way in season 5.
“To hell with the social norms. We are going to take over the world,” the Grimm actor told Parade. “We are not going to live peacefully with people anymore.”
Season 5 of Grimm premiered Friday night on NBC.
