Lamar Odom Recovery Update: Conscious And ‘Doing Good’

Lamar Odom continues his miraculous recovery after being found unconscious on Tuesday afternoon in a Las Vegas brothel. What initially appeared to be a very grim situation for Odom may turn into a chance for the former NBA champion to get clean and truly have a second chance at life. On late Tuesday into early Wednesday, many reports stated Lamar Odom did not have a good chance of survival, with some sources even claiming he had passed away.

After regaining consciousness on Friday, reports were still scarce regarding his true condition. Since he suffered multiple strokes, no one knew how Odom would ultimately be affected. According to the Los Angeles Times, Odom is not only continuing to improve, but he is talking to his family and friends, and even texting on his phone. For a man who had a survival prognosis of only 50 percent, these are huge improvements. Many sources speculated that he could even be brain dead, since he was initially believed to have been without oxygen for minutes.

Known as one of the better character guys in the league, many NBA players and celebrities have taken to Twitter this past week to show support for Lamar Odom and his recovery. Kobe Bryant left a game early on Tuesday to visit him, and former teammates Blake Griffin and Chris Paul went to see him as well, according to the BET Twitter page.

Before practice earlier today, Griffin spoke on the visit and how much Odom means to him.

“He probably has no idea we were there, but just to be there and to see him — hopefully he knows there’s a lot of guys that love him and want to see him do better and want to see him get better. He was great for me in teaching me that you’re going to have bad games, you’re going to have a bad stretch of the season; just shake it off, stay loose, stay happy,”

According to BET, Odom’s former coach, Jim Harrick, talked about him waking up.

“He woke up, and he spoke. Khloe [Kardashian] has promised me she is going to stay by his bedside until she and him can walk out of the hospital together.”

At this point, we still do not know the full extent of Odom’s condition. While he is talking and texting, he could still have mental and cognitive issues from the multiple strokes that he apparently suffered. According to Stroke.org, physical long-term effects include weakness, numbness, and stiffness. Cognitive issues include thinking, remembering, and recognizing things.

According to Perez Hilton’s Twitter page, Odom had even been considering an NBA comeback in recent months.

At 35-years-old, Lamar Odom is two years removed from his last NBA game in 2013 when he suited up for the Los Angeles Clippers. In 2013, he was a solid bench player for the Clippers scoring four points per game and securing 5.9 rebounds per game. He has not been a true difference maker since the 2010-2011 season though, where he scored 14.4 points per game and grabbed 8.7 rebounds per game.

Since he is still likely in for a long recovery, an NBA comeback is probably the last thing on Lamar Odom’s mind. Tests are still being done to find out the full extent of the drugs that were in Odom’s system, and to hopefully get him help for any addiction issues that he is dealing with. While his divorce to Khloe Kardashian is still pending, it appears she is going to be there to provide him the mental support that he is going to need.
