There is no denying it: music just sets the tone and mood wherever you are. Don’t you just love listening to a tune that moves you? Years ago, a show called Miami Vice changed the world of television forever by using current songs instead of just playing TV theme music. Since then, great series usually have great music. On The Walking Dead, there is no exception. TWD has featured many great songs in “days gone by,” and all of them reflect the world of TWD somewhat.
This article will mention the music on the official TWD soundtracks, and other songs throughout the series. Then a list of songs that should be part of an ultimate playlist for TWD will be presented. If you agree or disagree, it doesn’t matter, music and art are subjective right? Maybe this will inspire you to create your own Walking Dead playlist. Enjoy – you can also check out Republic Records TWD playlist as well.
In the soundtrack album, The Walking Dead, Vol. 1, there were only eight songs listed, but there were many more songs featured in the series. The songs on the first soundtrack, in order, are “Lead Me Home” – Jamie N Commons, “Main Title Theme Song (UNKLE Remix)” – Bear McCreary, “You Are The Wilderness” – Voxhaul Broadcast, “Love Bug” – Baby Bee, “Warm Shadow (Dactyl Remix)” – Fink, “Sinking Man” – Of Monsters and Men, “The Parting Glass” – Lauren Cohan (Maggie Greene) & Emily Kinney (Beth Kinney), and “Running” – Delta Spirit. While all of these songs were definitely TWD worthy, there were many more songs on the series that moved us as well.
Volume 2 of The Walking Dead soundtrack didn’t bring much more, there were only five songs – “Heavy Games” – Portugal. The Man, “Serpents (Basement)” – Sharon Van Etten, “Blackbird Song” – Lee DeWyze, “Be Not So Fearful” – A.C. Newman, and “This Old Death” – Ben Nichols. Again, these songs are definitely the heart and soul of TWD, but there are so many more.
Another soundtrack, Songs of Survival (2013), has some awesome songs as well. TWD has awesome theme music as well, thanks to Bear McCreary. He is an excellent composer who has been featured on numerous projects such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and of course The Walking Dead just to name a few. His music is a must for the TWD playlist!
Other music that is worth mentioning from TWD is “Love and Mercy” – Gazelle Twin, “Turn Into the Noise” – Patrick Watson, “Bad Blood” – Alison Mosshart and Eric Arjes, “Be Gone Dull Cage” – Kiev, “Oats in the Water” – Ben Howard, “The Last Pale Light In the West” – Ben Nichols, “Black” – Kari Kimmel, “Civilian” – Wye Oak, “Arsonist’s Lullaby” – Hozier, “We Carry On” – The Phantoms feat. Amy Stroup, and “Hold On” – Tom Waits (sung by Emily Greene). Again, there is so much more music that has been featured on TWD that is not mentioned here.
