‘American Horror Story’ Introvert Lady Gaga Finds Comfort With Her Co-Stars

Lady Gaga is already being hailed as the new queen of American Horror Story, even before AHS: Hotel has aired with series co-creator Ryan Murphy already agreeing to bring Ms. Gaga in on the sixth season. Coming together with the rest of the American Horror Story: Hotel cast, Lady Gaga joined a round table interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

For the savvy viewer, it comes as no surprise that there’s an overall theme to each season of American Horror Story and the AHS: Hotel season is no different. Lady Gaga reveals that addiction is the key to this season of American Horror Story with characters experiencing the symptoms of addiction in different and challenging ways. Ms. Gaga also revealed that her own character, Countess Elizabeth, will struggle with a unique kind of addiction.

“There is a journey for my character, in particular, through hemophilia and her need to drink blood to survive and to stay young, and that’s entwined with other stories about a need for sex, a need for freedom, a need for drugs, a need for attention, a need to survive,” American Horror Story‘s Lady Gaga revealed. “What’s interesting about this season is that you see the dichotomy of the two worlds: You have the hotel world, which feels decidedly like the Ryan Murphy world, and then you have the outside world. It’s addiction as the public sees it versus how it really is and how that all plays into each other.”

Ryan Murphy’s partner in crime, Brad Falchuk, adds that because Hotel Cortez is a run-down, centrally located hotel in downtown Los Angeles, it will naturally attract people looking for privacy, such as drug users, murderers, and other pillars of society.

Other American Horror Story stars, such as Max Greenfield and Sarah Paulson, also confirmed the addiction theme for the new season, saying that much that will be seen on American Horror Story: Hotel will serve as a metaphor for the signs of addiction. Greenfield suggested that addiction would loom over Hotel Cortez like a giant, black cloud.

There’s little doubt that 2015 has been extremely kind to Lady Gaga between her Grammy win and her performance at the Oscars, but the singer turned actress admits that she has had a hard time adjusting to her celebrity status. Ms. Gaga told People magazine that she often feels isolated and alone, because her status as a celebrity prevents her from going out to places where she might otherwise be able to meet new people.

Lady Gaga says she feels that there’s a wall between herself and “normal” people and she feels she’s judged far too heavily on what people have seen in the media. While Lady Gaga was nervous, when she first began working with the cast and crew of American Horror Story, Ms. Gaga soon found that the AHS: Hotel team was very accepting.

I’m happier than I’ve ever been now,” said American Horror Story‘s Lady Gaga, “because the people that I work with really, really care that my life is different and really, really work to make sure that I feel as normal as possible—so that I can have a great time and just be a normal girl, and just be a woman for Ryan on film.”

Lady Gaga added that she was very focused on not coming across as arrogant or self-absorbed, when she was on the American Horror Story set. Lady Gaga said she felt that bonding with the rest of the cast was more important than anything else.

“And I wanted to get to know them, and I wanted them to feel comfortable with me as a human being and a person and know that I was going to be available and open to them, and that I wasn’t going to come on set and be like, ‘Where’s my make up?! Where’s my trailer?!’ and be a huge bitch and make this The Gaga Show. The most important thing to me was that that did not happen.”
