‘Fear The Walking Dead’: Absolutely Everything We Know About Season 2 [Spoilers]
Now that season 1 of AMC’s newest zombie apocalypse series, Fear The Walking Dead, has aired, what can fans expect to see in the already commissioned season 2? Let’s have a look at absolutely everything we know so far.
SPOILER ALERT: This article contains information abut season 1 and 2 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you have not yet viewed all available episodes or would like to avoid potential spoilers about season 2.
- Time Jump. There may be a slight time jump in season 2 of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead according to an interview showrunner Dave Erickson did with The Hollywood Reporter. As Erickson pointed out, the season 1 finale concluded on with a huge emotional weight that will need to be addressed in season 2.
- Madison’s dark past explored. There have been a few small hints in season 1 of Fear The Walking Dead about Madison’s (played by Kim Dickens) past. In season 2, expect an expansion on this. But could murder be a part of her past? Dave Erickson hints at it to THR.
“A big part of the reason she doesn’t tell Travis about Artie [the principal-turned-zombie she put down in episode two] is because it hits a nerve in her history.”
Another suggestion is that perhaps Madison has been aggressive in her past or has had a drug problem and that is why she has the need to hide it away from the people around her. Regardless, it is possible that at least some of her dark past will be revealed in season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead.
- Will Travis break like Madison and Liza predicted? While Madison may have a dark past, for her boyfriend, Travis (Cliff Curtis), it may be his future that looks dark now after he had to kill his wife, Liza (Elizabeth Rodriguez), when she was bitten. The way Travis copes — or not — in the aftermath of this event will be explored further in season 2.
- Zombies vs. pirates. At the end of season 1 of Fear The Walking Dead, it looked highly likely that the group would be heading out to sea on Victor Strand’s (Colman Domingo) yacht. However, Dave Erickson now suggests that while the objective is to get to the boat, the group is not the only one with the good idea. And we know from The Walking Dead what happens if a group has a secure location, don’t we? Will Fear’s group have to contend with pirates trying to take over their yacht in season 2? Perhaps, as Erickson suggests, “Strand’s yacht, [is] a pretty handsome vessel. It’s something that you can survive on for a good period of time and that’s something others might covet.” As a result of this, season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead will likely split its time between land and sea as the group searches for pockets of humanity where the outbreak may not have touched yet.
- Accelerated pace. For the fans who complained about the slow pace of season 1 of Fear The Walking Dead, get ready for the pace to speed up in season 2. Now that the group knows they are all infected and the series is getting close to the time Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) awoke from his coma is season 1 of The Walking Dead, the advent of larger amounts of zombies as well as the potential human threat will mean season 2 will accelerate dramatically.
- Still things to discover about the contagion. In the season 1 finale of Fear The Walking Dead, Liza told Madison that everyone was infected, that they will reanimate when they die. So, will there be anything else to be learned about the outbreak moving forward into season 2? Judging by the fact the group will be searching for untouched tracts of land, they are in denial about this rule of The Walking Dead. As Dave Erickson tells THR, season 2 will involve the group having to learn for themselves that life as they know it is well and truly over.
- What is family anyway? Ever since the concept of Fear The Walking Dead was released, the show has been about its core families. Leading into season 2, this aspect will still be explored. As Dr. Exner (Sandrine Holt) asked of Liza, what exactly is family: blood or bond? There are, basically, three families now that make up the core character group: Travis and Madison’s families, the Salazars, and Victor Strand. How will they bond together on the confines of a boat? And what happens if one member (say, for example, Nick (Frank Dillane) and his drug issues) compromises the entire group? How far are you willing to go for the one you love? As well as this concept, there will be conflict to explore between Travis and Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades) as Travis nearly caused the death of Daniel’s daughter in the season 1 finale. Also expect more of an exploration into Victor Strand’s and Nick’s relationship.
- Operation Cobalt and the military are still operational — for at least part of season 2. For fans who thought the military had abandoned their operation Cobalt, think again. While the military may plan to retreat, they will still be trying to contain the spread of infection by the undead.
- Fear The Walking Dead: Flight 462. Initially it was thought there would be one surviving character from Flight 462 that would appear in season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead. However, Dave Erickson now suggests there might be more than one crossover character.
“We’ll see at least one character from Flight 462 who makes an appearance. As to how involved that narrative thread becomes, that remains to be seen. We will conflate those two story lines over the course of season two.”
While there are some potential ways in which the new characters could meet up with the old, one theory is the plane will crash into the ocean and the group will come across the new character/s floating on debris while they are on Strand’s yacht.
- Who didn’t die conclusively on screen might return in season 2. Speaking of characters, some of those we thought may have died in season 1, may not have. Erickson says fans should expect at least some of the smaller characters from season 1 to reappear in season 2. While Erickson thinks Dr. Exner really did die, other characters like Corporal Andrew Adams (Shawn Hatosy) and fan favorite Tobias (Lincoln A. Castellanos) are alive. But only time will tell if they return in season 2.
- When will season 2 premiere? ET Online asked Dave Erickson when season 2 of Fear The Walking Dead would premiere in 2016, to which he replied:
“We have an idea of where the first six or seven episodes are going to go because it’s going to be a 15-episode season. I would imagine that we would be premiering in a Walking Dead-free zone.”
Fear The Walking Dead returns to AMC with season 2 in 2016.
