Today’s ‘Metal Gear Solid V’ Update Brings New Weapons, Improved Mission Rewards, And Adds Timed FOB Events

While Konami might currently be preoccupied with this week’s launch of Metal Gear Online, the developer is also still equally focused on bringing new features to the existing content that can presently be found within Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Releasing alongside the game’s new online multiplayer mode, Konami announced several new gameplay expansions that will go live in Metal Gear Solid V following today’s title update.

It was well documented that Metal Gear Online was scheduled to launch today on current-gen consoles, but Konami remained secretive about most of the features also coming to Metal Gear Solid V as part of the accompanying update until hours before the patch is expected to release.

Konami detailed that one of the biggest changes being introduced with today’s update will change how players will be able to engage in FOB missions in Metal Gear Solid V. Before the patch goes live, users are only able to attack the FOB, or Forward Operating Base, of their direct rivals. Furthermore, engaging in such an act would open the assailant up to a retaliation attack.

In an attempt to give players greater freedom while engaging in Metal Gear Solid V‘s FOB attacks, Konami is adding limited FOB events to the game that will periodically give gamers a small window to infiltrate a wider selection of player bases. Additionally, these targets will be unable to strike back, giving fans the opportunity move against their rivals with impunity.

“Until now, only the FOBs of rival players could be infiltrated, but following this update you will have access to special “Event FOBs” prepared by the game developers. In ‘Event FOB’ missions, there is no risk of retaliation (no defending player will invade your base later as revenge), so you can steal materials and abduct staff without fear of repercussions.”

The update will also allow players to purchase FOB insurance through Metal Gear Solid V‘s controversial microtransaction service. Basically, gamers can pay for the paid service which will reimburse them for any materials or staff that are lost during an FOB attack.

After applying today’s patch, fans will also find ways to improve Big Boss and his private army thanks to the addition of a new tier of weapons. The improved equipment can also be used by the Security and Combat Teams of Mother Base, which will pay off since the new title update is also improving the reward payouts for all online Combat Deployment missions. Players should also see several new missions added to make sure that Combat Teams will have more options available to them.

It is clear that Konami is dedicated to bring free content update to Metal Gear Solid V, but the developer didn’t mention whether the patch will also fix any of the known issues that are currently affecting the some users. Just last week, Game Informer reported on new Metal Gear Solid V bug on the PS4 that can destroy save data for households that have multiple Playstation Network accounts on a single system. Konami has since added the following warning that is displayed as soon as Metal Gear Solid V is accessed on a PS4.

“We have been made aware of cases where playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain with multiple SEN accounts on a single Playstation 4 system can result in the message ‘This save data cannot be used, as the relevant download content was not found’ being displayed when attempting to resume a saved game, making it impossible to start the game.”

At the current time, Konami doesn’t have a timeframe for when the issue might be addressed. For now, Metal Gear Solid V players are simply urged not to play the game from multiple accounts.

“We sincerely apologize, but we must request that only a single SEN account per Playstation 4 system be used to play the game. We are working on methods for solving this issue, and will update this notification once the details have been decided. In the meantime, we deeply appreciate your patience.”

This isn’t the first time that Metal Gear Solid V has been affected by a data corruption bug. As the Inquisitr reported last month, the some players saw their save files compromised while using the sniper Quiet during select missions. That particular issue has since been resolved. Hopefully, that new data issues on the PS4 will be fixed soon as well.
