A vicious pit bull attack left two cousins severely injured in what authorities are calling a 30-minute “feeding frenzy.”
The two cousins, Isabella George, 19, and Rebkah Forgey, 20, were jogging on a rural country road in Carroll County, Indiana, on Thursday, when a pack four of pit bulls attacked them without being provoked, the Daily Headlines reports. The terrified women ran across a field towards their home. However, they weren’t fast enough, and the vicious animals outran them.
Falling to the ground, George and Forgey were easy prey for the dangerous dogs, who unrelentingly tore at their flesh. Police described the pit bull attack as a 30-minute “feeding frenzy.”
The most severely wounded of the two cousins, Rebekah Forgery, suffered serious injuries to 75 percent of her scalp. Additionally, her muscle was ripped from her legs, according to Opposing Views . The 20-year-old is still at the hospital in Intensive Care Unit, but her condition is reported as stable.
Isabella George sustained what are described as puncture wounds from head to toe, but is recovering at home, her family shared some pictures, that are graphic, of the aftermath of the pit bull attack Thursday. Both women were lucky to still be alive.
According to Indiana news station, WTHR , police says this is not the first time the pit bulls attack people. Carroll County Sheriff Toby Leazenby says the incident warrants criminal charges against the owner, 50-year-old Richard Darter, who tried to stop the attack, but was also bitten by his own dogs.
The two cousins — who were finishing a two-mile jog on October 1 — and the owner were finally rescued when a motorist who happened to drive by the remote area and saw the horrific pit bull attack in progress. She drove into the field with her truck and was able to scare the dogs, take the victims into her car, and drive them to the hospital.
Sheriff Leazenby called the woman who saved the victims of the pit bull attack a “godsend,” because the chances of somebody driving by on the remote country road at that moment were very slim, according to the Daily Mail .
“It is like a scene out of a horror movie. When I saw them they were covered in blood and just mauled. It was terrible,” said Shena George, Isabella’s mom.
“I’m just thankful she is alive, she has bite marks all over her body,” he said.
Isabella’s mother shared some very disturbing images of her daughter’s battered body after the pit bull attack and said the young woman will need skin and muscle grafts in the future. Sheena George believes the two-cousins fought the dogs for nearly half an hour and were nearly killed by the vicious animals, and the Good Samaritan who came to their aid, possibly saved all three of their lives.
“I didn’t know if Rebkah would make it,” she said.
The Sheriff ordered his officers to find the pit bulls responsible for the horrific attack on the two-cousins and kill them. All four animals were euthanized the following day.
Leazenby admitted the dogs have caused trouble in the past and police were called to take control, but nothing as serious as the attack on the two-cousins. In this instance, he’s asking the prosecutor to file criminal charges against the dogs’ owner, Richard Darter, who has been summoned on previous occasions, according to his deputies.
As to whether the pit bull attack could have been prevented by authorities? “Within the limits of the law, the answer is no,” the sheriff, who continues to gather evidence for possible criminal charges against the owner, said.
“You need to face consequences for actions and things you are responsible for,” said Derrick George, of the pit bull attack that nearly cost his daughter and niece their lives.
