Tiger Woods Wins 73rd PGA Tour Title [Video]
Tiger Woods claimed his 73rd PGA Tour title today to tie Jack Nicklaus in second on the all-time wins list.
Woods, who finished two strokes ahead of Rory Sabbatini and Andres Romero, said that he played a nearly flawless game today at the Memorial.
Woods said:
“Boy, I hit it good today…. I hit the ball just as good as I have in years. I never really missed a shot today… and I had the pace of the greens really nice today, where I struggled yesterday, and made a few putts.”
Reuters reports that Woods started Sunday strong with four birdies on the first seven holes. He also birdied three of the last four holes, including an amazing chip in shot on the 16th hole.
Woods finished five-under-par for the day and nine-under for the weekend. Woods is now tied with Nicklaus for the most career wins. Sam Snead, however, leads the way with 82 PGA Tour wins.
Woods said:
“It’s been a nice run since I’ve turned pro and to do it at age 36 is not too shabby… I’ve been very proud of what I’ve done so far, and I feel like I’ve got a lot of good years ahead of me.”
Nicklaus, who hosted the tournament, said:
“If he’s going to do (win his 73rd title), which he was obviously going to do, I’d like to see it happen here. That was good.”
Nicklaus had nothing but praise for Tiger after the tournament, especially about his birdie on the 16th hole. Nicklaus said it was the “most unbelievable shot I’ve ever seen.”
“Under the circumstances — the circumstances being Tiger has been struggling — it was either fish or cut bait… He had one place to land the ball. He’s playing a shot that if he leaves it short, he’s going to leave himself again a very difficult shot. If he hits it long, he’s going to probably lose the tournament. He lands the ball exactly where it has to land. Going in the hole was a bonus. But what a shot!… I don’t think under the circumstances I’ve ever seen a better shot.”
