Judge Judy has been dishing out her brand of televised justice for almost two decades now, so it must come as a relief whenever a plaintiff or defendant basically does her job for her. In a short clip from a purse-snatching case, which resurfaced this week and quickly went viral, the defendant almost immediately incriminates himself, much to Judge Judy’s delight. Case closed, judgement for the plaintiff in the amount of $500. The clip opens with Judge Judy asking the plaintiff to describe the contents of her stolen purse, and as she rattles off a list, the defendant hatches a brilliant plan. When the plaintiff claims that she had an earpiece and calculator in the stolen purse, the defendant immediately interrupts her.
“There was no earpiece in there, ma’am.”
The camera cuts to Judge Judy cracking a smile. She can barely contain her jublilation as she says, “I love it. I love it.”
Judy then turns to her bailiff and points at the defendants, calling them “Dumb and Dumber.”
The clip runs for 26 seconds, but the defendant incriminates himself by revealing his knowledge of the contents of the stolen purse at about the 12-second mark. That almost has to be a record.
Judge Judith Sheindlin’s arbitration-based reality show has been on the air since 1996, and it has churned out a lot of memorable moments for fans of daytime television over the years. This particular case is from an episode that aired in 2010, so it isn’t immediately clear why the clip suddenly went viral, aside from the fact that it’s an amusing display of poor judgement.
Oddly enough, this isn’t even the first time that the Judge Judy purse case video mysteriously went viral long after the episode aired. While the episode originally aired in 2010, it made the rounds on the Internet about a year later, according to a 2011 report from the Huffington Post .
According to the Huffington Post , Reddit was responsible for the viral video resurfacing in 2011. Why the case of the “Dumb and Dumber” purse-snatchers suddenly popped up again four years later is a mystery, but it seems like a great time to check out some other hilarious moments from Judith Sheindlin’s long-running show.
Other viral Judge Judy moments include the time a 21-year-old man admitted to having 10 kids with “about four” different women. According to the man, in what was a bizarrely ill-advised joke, one of the women was Judge Judy’s daughter.
Then there was the woman who claimed she saw her friend, “crouching down by the pool with her iPhone in her left hand, but I didn’t see her iPhone.”
In all of those cases, it was the defendant who slipped up. In this one, the plaintiff gets so fed up that she leaves, slams the door, and Judge Judy dismisses the case.
Of course, on Judge Judy, the action doesn’t always end when the judgement comes down.
Sometimes, the humor doesn’t even involve the case at hand. In this clip, Judy boots a paid extra from the audience.
Sheindlin has been on the air for almost two decades, her show is in its 20th season, and she recently inked a deal that will keep Judge Judy on the air through at least 2020. Out of all the cases she’s heard, including the ones you can watch above, she says that the case of the “Dumb and Dumber” purse snatchers was one of the easiest she ever had to judge.
Going around the web today, this was one of our easier cases – https://t.co/Q836eJPj2w
