One of the most talked about moments in the first season of Outlander was the spanking scene that occurred between Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ) and Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe). Although Balfe related the scene to a childhood scolding, Hueghan recently admitted that he really enjoyed playing it all out.
“It was kind of the first time I really got to do some gritty acting, and it was great,” Heughan told Scotland Now . “We sort of tore it out of each other.”
While Sam Heughan added that both he and Balfe “really relished that scene,” the actress revealed that she thought the scene represented a lashing out of emotions.
“Sometimes when you’re scared or when you’ve been hurt, you don’t know what to do with all of this emotion, so you just lash out,” she stated.
Meanwhile, the second season of Outlander is expected to air in early 2016 and will include the return of Jamie, Claire, and Black Jack and Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies). With the second season based on book two of Diana Gabaldon’s series, titled Dragonfly in Amber , the show will also be introducing a number of new characters.
The new season will feature Jamie and Claire traveling to France as they attempt to prevent the Battle of Culloden from happening. With the two time travelers in a completely different setting this season, the show will feature several characters who belong to the upper class of Parisian society.
Although both Jamie and Claire will be based primarily in France this season, they will make it back to Scotland at some point. While in Scotland, they are set to come into contact with the likes of Lord John Grey.
In regards to the Grey, there has been some talk about a potential spin-off series for the character. With that in mind, executive producer Ronald Moore recently discussed a spin-off with Realty Today and seemed open to the possibility of a series based on the character.
“It’s in the back of our minds as a potential thing. But right now our minds are pretty firmly set on just delivering the second season,” Moore stated in the interview. “We’ll see what happens down the line on Lord Grey.”
Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe return for Season 2 of Outlander in the spring of 2016. Whether or not it includes any more moments like the spanking scene in Season 1 is yet to be seen.
