Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Terrell Owens Comeback In The Cards? T.O. Reaches Out To Team, But Faces Long Odds
The Dallas Cowboys and Terrell Owens could be reuniting, at least if the rumors are true.
The 41-year-old wide receiver has made overtures to the team about a comeback, one that might seem unlikely. Owens wore out his welcome in Dallas when he played there, but now believes he has something to offer the team that has been hit hard by injuries.
The Dallas Cowboys will be without wide receiver Dez Bryant and quarterback Tony Romo for quite a while, and Terrell Owens told Rich Eisen on Monday that he is ready to step in and help.
Owens was also confident that he and his former teammates could put the bad blood behind them. For those who may not remember, Owens publicly accused Romo of favoring Witten over him, and said he believed that Witten had a hand in him leaving the team.
“We all know what happened when I was there, and there were some things said where it may have fractured the relationship between myself and Witten and Romo,” Owens said (via Fox Sports). “Time has passed, and hopefully they know that I’ve moved on beyond that, and maybe hopefully they have. But for me, it’s all about giving myself an opportunity. That’s all I ever really wanted.”
T.O. apparently even had his agent reach out to the Dallas Cowboys, but there are no indications yet that the team wants his services. For comparison, the Cowboys moved quickly to bring in some depth behind new starting quarterback Brandon Weeden, trading for veteran Matt Cassel. There are no rumors yet that the Dallas Cowboys that they plan to do the same with Owens.
But as Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk noted, the market for retired wide receivers trying to make an NFL comeback appears to be non-existent.
“Owens said he feels he’d be a ‘viable’ option for the team given a week or so to round into form. As we’ve seen with the lack of interest in a Randy Moss comeback, though, it looks like the NFL has decided that Owens will remain a former player.”
While there are no rumors yet connecting the Dallas Cowboys to Terrell Owens, there is a chance that the team could make some kind of move to improve the offense, especially if they slip in the NFC East standings. Whether that help would be Owens or one of the other, younger wide receivers available would remain to be seen.
