Netflix Grabs Exclusive Rights To ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Season 1
Netflix is probably in a pretty happy place right now after grabbing exclusive worldwide streaming rights to the first season of How to Get Away With Murder. This is an even bigger deal for Netflix, because Viola Davis, who is the leading character in the show, just won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her role in How to Get Away With Murder. Davis is the first African American woman ever to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama, and the Emmys have been around for 67 years.
All of the episodes of the crazy thriller-drama are now available on Netflix. The show follows an troubled but brilliant lawyer who is also a university professor. Annalise Keating, who is played by Viola Davis, and her group of law students are placed between a rock and a hard place when a fellow student is murdered by someone they all know. At this time, How to Get Away With Murder is limited to only streaming in the United States, Canada, and Latin America, according to Digital Trends. The remaining territories will soon be able to watch the show later in 2015 or early 2016.
Sean Carey, Vice President of Global TV at Netflix, said that they are “excited to offer global audiences Season 1 of How to Get Away With Murder, offering members a chance to discover it for the first time or relive the drama of season one before the new season’s premiere.”
Carey continued to say the following.
“Netflix is dedicated to bringing great entertainment to our members around the world, in both current and future markets.”
How to Get Away With Murder is ABC’s highest-rated new series, according to Janice Marinelli, Disney-ABC’s President of Home Entertainment and Television Distribution. The show is executive-produced by the same team that does Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, and created by Shonda Rhimes, who is the mastermind behind the other two great drama series, Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal.
Marinelli told the Hollywood Reporter the following.
“This agreement to make our season one episodes available underscores the value of this series, and reinforces the overall popularity of How to Get Away With Murder on ABC and its other first-run platforms around the world.”
The second season of How to Get Away With Murder premieres on Thursday, September 24, on ABC.
