Cris Cyborg Says UFC Has Double Standards With Drug Testing, Criticizes Ronda Rousey
The world’s top featherweight female fighter Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino isn’t happy, and Ronda Rousey is the target of her frustration, following an unfortunate news leak for the UFC.
Cyborg then linked to a Deadspin article, which pointed at what they called a “sketchy” drug test result from Vitor Belfort before his fight with Jon Jones at UFC 152. A drug test from the event was accidentally forwarded to several third parties, which somehow didn’t leak online until this week. Those who received the e-mail were then contacted and asked to destroy the document.
Cyborg made a post on Facebook about the issue.
“Somebody tests positive for steroids before fighting for a UFC World Championship, but is still allowed to fight, and it takes almost 3 years before the public finds out? Open your eyes! I am clean, and am willing to prove it with a year of Olympic testing before any fight, I wonder if the current UFC 135 pound champion (Ronda Rousey) is willing to agree to the same? What do you mean, some are crucified and others are not even mentioned!”
Cris Cyborg has had her own documented issues with performance enhancing drugs, as she tested positive for stanozolol following a fight nearly four years ago.
Cyborg called out longtime rival Ronda Rousey, who has often criticized Cyborg for her former drug test failure. The two have had a long, winding road regarding an agreeable weight in which to fight at, which still has no resolution.
The most interesting part of Cyborg’s comments was asking if Rousey was willing to participate in Olympic-style drug testing. Rousey actually participated in the 2008 Olympics, and is subject to the same drug testing as Cris Cyborg throughout the entire year. While the older UFC testing policy wasn’t nearly as stringent, as champion, Ronda Rousey has been tested for all of her UFC fights.
Cyborg’s post didn’t seem to have a focal point, as the issue preventing the two from fighting has been her own inability to make weight. That problem may soon be rectified, however, as she has planned a fight later this year at 140 pounds for an Invicta event. Cyborg has been under UFC contract since late 2014, which the company did in an effort to make the eventual super fight happen.
Rousey, on the other hand, is set to face undefeated Holly Holm in a huge stadium show at UFC 193 in Australia. The UFC hopes they can fill up Etihad Stadium with anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 fans.
