‘Batman V Superman’ Star Jeremy Irons Says He Will Play A ‘Completely Different’ Version Of Alfred Pennyworth
With all the attention the main roles are getting in regard to the upcoming film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it is easy to overlook some of the minor but important characters in the movie. With that in mind, Jeremy Irons, who is set to play Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming film, recently sat down with Toronto Sun to talk about his role as the iconic character.
It is already well established that Ben Affleck’s Batman is going to be an older version of the character, which means the backdrop of the story is going to vastly different from anything we have seen lately. In terms of how director Zack Snyder wants him to portray Batman’s butler and close adviser, Irons reveals his take on the character will be completely his own.
“Zack Snyder, the director, wanted to create a completely different Alfred. So I felt I didn’t have to carry any baggage from previous ones,” he stated in the interview.
“It’s sort of a reincarnation if you’d like. I had a feeling I was creating my own Alfred, more of a man who can actually do anything if he has to.”
Irons, who is also getting ready to appear in the upcoming film, The Man Who Knew Infinity, adds that the filming process for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been particularly long and slow, even though he only appears in “five or so” scenes.
“It was a month in Detroit, which is actually longer than you’d imagine,” he explained. “But big films move slowly. It’s like a huge oil tanker.”
Although he has managed to keep himself busy with his latest roles, Irons went on to admit that the film industry is quickly changing. “The business is so different now than when I started,” he said. “There are fewer opportunities to do good.”
While fans wait to see just how Irons has managed to change such an iconic character as Alfred, it is clear that the film is set to introduce a lot of changes to the DC Comics Universe. That being said, it is good to know that Snyder is not afraid to mix things up.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Affleck, Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman). The highly-anticipated film is set to hit theaters everywhere on March 25, 2016.
