‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Star Charlie Hunnam And Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim 2’ Delayed Indefinitely
Fans of Charlie Hunnam and Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim will be disappointed to learn that a sequel to the film may now be in jeopardy. According to Variety, Legendary Pictures has decided to place the production for Pacific Rim 2 on hold, at least for now.
Del Toro decided to follow up the first film with a sequel back in June of 2014. The official release date was set by Universal for April 7, 2017, before being changed to August 4, 2017.
Filming for the new movie was expected to begin as early as November. However, with Legendary backing out, the entire project will be halted until the studio gives it the green light to proceed. For now, neither Legendary nor Universal has yet to comment or release any details as to why they decided to pull the plug on del Toro’s movie.
As fans may recall, Pacific Rim was a futuristic film that followed a group of people living in the 2020s. These people controlled “Jaegers” in order to fight off creatures, named Kaijus, who had entered Earth through a portal in the Pacific Ocean.
Pacific Rim featured Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Robert Kazinsky. While it isn’t known how many of these original actors would have returned to their roles in the sequel, Hunnam did express interest in working with del Toro once again.
Although the studios have yet to declare why they placed a hold on the film, it likely has something to do with budgeting concerns. The first movie cost close to $200 million to produce and only managed to bring in a little over $100 million in U.S. sales. Internationally, however, the move did bring in over $300 million, bumping up its worldwide total to over $400 million.
Considering the numbers, especially the United States box office, it is likely that the studios are not willing to chance another high-budget film until they get additional backing. That being said, it is possible the film will eventually be produced, but at this time it isn’t known how that will unfold.
While fans may be disappointed that another team-up between Hunnam and del Toro has been delayed, they can enjoy the two working together in del Toro’s upcoming film, Crimson Peak. The film, which also stars the likes of Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston, is set to hit theaters this coming fall.
Since ending his run as Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy, Charlie Hunnam has been quite busy with film projects. This summer he wrapped Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, and he is currently in Belfast filming The Lost City of Z with Twilight‘s Robert Pattinson.
