From her time as Peggy Bundy on Married with Children to playing Gemma Teller on Sons of Anarchy , Katey Sagal has certainly had her share of diverse roles. With Sagal starring in her husband’s newest series, The Bastard Executioner , the actress recently sat down with Variety and discussed what it’s like working with Kurt Sutter.
“Some people think when you’re husband and wife, you work together, you sit across the desk from each other, and see each other all the work-long day. It’s really not that way when he’s writing and producing,” Sagal stated. “It’s wonderful that we get a few moments to act together. Kurt’s really a good actor. I’ve never been able to do scenes with Kurt. That’s kind of new for us.”
Katey Sagal plays the role of Annora of the Alders in the series. Annora is a mysterious character who is drastically different than anything Sagal has played in the past. When asked about playing strong female roles in worlds dominated by men, Sagal attributed Sutter’s ability as a writer as one reason they’ve been able to pull it off.
“Well, Annora’s not like Lady Love, who is in the middle of the shire with all the dudes, but Kurt writes women really well. I think for Annora, her energy is so much more ethereal than female,” she explained. “She’s not like Gemma, who led with her sexuality, to manipulate and to throw herself, with her power, around. That’s not Annora’s vibe at all. I haven’t really thought about it like, “I’m here with all these guys.”
Aside from her role in The Bastard Executioner , Sagal also discussed the reports of an upcoming Sons of Anarchy prequel . The prequel is believed to focus on the original biker club members and how their relationships developed shortly after they returned home from the Vietnam War. Specifically, Sagal was asked who she thought would be a good candidate to play a young Gemma Teller.
“Oh, wow. No one has ever asked me that. Oh my gosh. Who would do a young Gemma?” Sagal stated. “I think it would be—she’d have to be 18. The prequel would take place when John Teller and Piney were just coming back from Vietnam. He met Gemma when she was 18. I don’t even know—some young hot chick.”
Although her daughter might be a good candidate for the role, Sagal wasn’t convinced.
“I don’t know if my daughter is biker-y. I think, by then, Sarah would be older. She’s 21. I’m sure Kurt would find some young thing. I don’t know. That’s a good question.”
