Rockstar Games Explains Why ‘GTA V’ Won’t Have Any Single-Player DLC Any Time Soon

When Grand Theft Auto V first launched on last-gen consoles two years ago this month, most assumed Rockstar Games would eventually release single-player DLC that would expand upon the title’s story narrative. After numerous rumors, and even hints about story DLC from the developers themselves, it doesn’t seem like GTA V is any closer to getting additional campaign content.

What has changed in the past two years, which has seen Grand Theft Auto V launch on current-gen consoles as well as PC? According to game’s creators, the introduction of GTA Online has drastically changed how the developer looks at adding post-launch content. Speaking to IGN, Rockstar North Director of Design Imran Sarwar discusses the impact that the fully-fledged online mode has made to the future of GTA V, as well as the studio behind the massive hit.

The most immediate change that the success of GTA Online has caused is the fact that Rockstar doesn’t appear to believe creating single-player DLC should be a priority. Sarwar revealed that rather than building a story add-on, the entire Grand Theft Auto team is currently busy working on the game’s online mode. This means fans hoping for single-player DLC for GTA V might have a long wait, since the developer isn’t actively working any such project.

“Right now our focus is on GTA Online which has exceeded our expectations. We currently have all key members of the team that launched Grand Theft Auto V focused on supporting GTA Online in every capacity… from all content through Heists, and now to these latest updates. This comes from our initial approach to GTA Online”

Since Grand Theft Auto V first launched, Sarwar claims Rockstar Games decided that GTA Online should be considered an equal part of the game next to the story campaign. As a result, the developer has fully focused on the title’s online services since they wanted their best people working on the online mode.

“We wanted to create an experience that was equal in quality and detail to the efforts we had made in our single player games, and we believed players could have both without sacrificing one over the other. GTA Online has proven too interesting and too important to be separate from the main mission of the entire team.”

The bottom line is gamers shouldn’t hold their breath waiting on the launch of any single-player DLC for GTA V. Despite plenty of rumors to the contrary, Rockstar Games has definitively stated new content for GTA Online has taken priority over a story add-on at this time.

In fact, as the Inquisitr recently reported, the game’s next big update is set to launch later this week. The free patch will add a series of Freemode events to GTA Online‘s open world. These new challenges will periodically begin if players aren’t currently engaged in an active mission.

Would you like to see GTA V eventually receive single-player DLC or would you like to see the developer continue to focus on GTA Online?
