Chris Brown’s Custody Dispute Might Be Derailed By A Drug Test
Chris Brown’s victory in the battle for custody of his daughter, Royalty, isn’t a sure thing. Not yet.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Chris Brown and Nia Guzman, Royalty’s mother, have been locked in a custody dispute. Guzman asked the court that Brown be allowed only supervised visitation and that her child support payments be raised from $2,500 a month to $15,000 a month.
When Guzman filed the legal complaint against Chris Brown, she lived in Texas. She has since moved to California, and filed papers for the case to be moved to California. A Houston judge denied Guzman’s request on the grounds that when she filed the initial complaint, she was a resident of Texas.
At first, it looked like Guzman was denied every request. The Houston judge ordered Guzman and Chris Brown to share custody of 15-month-old Royalty. The judge also denied Guzman’s request to increase her monthly child support payments, and ordered Brown to pay Guzman $2,500 a month in child support for Royalty.
But, Brown’s victory isn’t actually as complete as it seemed.
TMZ reports that to get joint custody of Royalty, Chris Brown had to agree that his mother be present anytime he had custody of Royalty. Guzman’s attorneys also demanded that Brown provide hair and urine samples for drug testing. Guzman reportedly accused Brown of smoking weed, and said it made him unfit to take even joint custody of Royalty. The judge ordered Brown to provide samples on-the-spot. So far, there is no word on what will happen if the samples test positive.
Brown and Guzman also had to agree to mediation to determine the details of their shared custody order. The judge set up a four-day rotation, meaning Guzman has custody of Royalty for four days and then Brown takes custody for four days, but ordered the two to attend mediation to reach a long-term custody and support agreement. If neither Brown nor Guzman can agree on custody or support arrangements, the case will go to trial.
Guzman’s attorneys have already said they will revisit the child support issue during mediation. If Brown refuses to increase the monthly support payments, could Guzman reject every custody proposal and force the case to trial?
If Chris Brown is worried about losing custody of his daughter, he isn’t letting it show. In a recent Instagram post, Brown showed off his pre-show routine, which involves playing doctor with Royalty.
