WWE News: Chris Benoit’s Son Backstage At WWE Event, Attitude Era Talent Also Backstage

WWE may have wiped Chris Benoit’s name from the record books, but they aren’t alienating the rest of his family.

The late Benoit’s son, David was backstage at Friday night’s WWE live event in Edmonton, which has become somewhat of a regular occurrence. David was also backstage in February when WWE visited town. Fellow Canadian Natalya was quick to snap a photo with the young Benoit, and express her happiness that he made it out.

David, 22, is the son of Chris and his first wife, Martina Benoit. The two also had a daughter, Megan, before the two divorced in 1997. Chris would go on to marry Nancy Sullivan, who performed in WCW as Woman. This unfortunately led to the biggest catastrophe in professional wrestling history, when Benoit took his own life after killing Nancy and their son Daniel.

David has had rumors surrounding him for years, as he was spotted training with former WWE star and Billy Robinson protege Harry Smith in late 2013. This led many to speculate that David Benoit was entertaining the idea of stepping into the cage for an MMA fight, as Smith had been training in the sport.

In the spring of 2014, it was also rumored that David Benoit would be entering the world of professional wrestling. Smith Hart promoted a show that advertised David in his first ever match, tagging with Chavo Guerrero Jr. The match was eventually called off, but no reason was given by the promotion. However, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter said that Chris Jericho contacted Hart about the booking.

Jericho, who has been a close friend of David Benoit’s for years, was angry that Benoit would be promoted despite not having been trained. Jericho saw the move as a publicity stunt and asked that Benoit be removed from the show altogether. Meltzer’s report also stated that Hart wasn’t planning on having Benoit actually wrestle on the card.

David Benoit also told F4W that WWE is open to him using his real name if he were to wrestle.

“For all you dirtsheets out there and all you fans, it was at a show in Edmonton, two years ago, I sat down in the production office, talking to one of the writers, they said ‘Yup, we’ll use the Benoit name again. We could do a lot with it.’ There’s the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

According to Cageside Seats, Benoit had enrolled in Lance Storm’s academy, but never showed up.

In addition to David Benoit making an appearance backstage at the event, Phil Lafon was also in the house. You may remember Lafon from his 1997 run with the WWF, where he and Doug Furnas were a part of the company’s tag-team division. The duo also performed in Extreme Championship Wrestling. Like Benoit, Lafon snapped a picture with “The Queen Of Harts.”
