Top Five Stephen Colbert Moments From His ‘The Late Show’ Debut

As Stephen Colbert officially takes over hosting duties from David Letterman, a new era is upon us. Stephen Colbert sat in the host’s chair of his new desk at the newly renovated Ed Sullivan Theater for his first night as Late Show host, and showered the audience with his particular brand of snarky wit.

Late night TV is seeing another change of dynasty. This year it’s Colbert. Last year it was Jimmy Fallon taking over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno. But this is different. Taking the place of late night giant David Letterman is monumental. But as the Atlantic reports, Stephen Colbert proved he is up to it, and brings something very unique to The Late Show.

5. Sponsored By Hummus

Stephen brought out the show sponsors early. What better sponsor for the first of what is sure to be many nights of laughs than a savory snack for the health conscious. Surely all those in attendance at the Ed Sullivan Theater went out to buy tubs of roasted red pepper hummus after seeing Colbert introduce the snack via a possessed amulet.

4. Donald Trump and Oreo Cookies

Stephen pigged out on Oreo cookies while ridiculing his favorite politician. The Trump jokes arrived in a never-ending barrage, reminding the audience how much a Trump speech is of the best in stand-up comedy. Colbert dished out a Trump joke with each Oreo consumed, and ended up downing almost two packs.

3. George Clooney’s Bad Acting

George Clooney came on the show to reveal his directorial brilliance in some of the worst acting you’re likely to see him do. It’s all in fun, but Colbert and Clooney took Decision Strike as the next big picture. Colbert made Clooney a bomb-defusing secretary general of the United Nations. Fans need to make sure this movie idea doesn’t take shape in any way.

2. Jeb Bush Almost Praises Obama

Colbert Getting Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush to praise President Obama was one of the highlights of the night. Bush admitted that Obama has good intentions, when prompted by Colbert on ending divisive politics. Bush almost gained the sympathy and praise of Colbert and the audience before he went on to say, “I just think he’s wrong on a lot of issues.” Colbert’s brilliance for political comedy should be a highlight for years to come.

1. Jon Stewart Makes A Cameo

Jon Stewart’s cameo appearance at the end of a countrywide performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” was just about the craziest thing you could see last night. As Stephen got towards the end of the song, Jon hid in plain sight in catcher’s uniform and mask. He lifted it to expose a grizzled, bearded Jon Stewart. Jon Stewart must be resting after his milestone move. He’s got to be the first retired talk show host to start kicking butt in the WWE. Stephen Colbert, watch out for this man.
