‘Once Upon A Time’ Season 5 Spoilers: Emma’s ‘Driving Force’ And Ruby’s Return
Many fans are wondering just what’s going to be going on with Emma as the new Dark One in Once Upon a Time Season 5, and perhaps who she was before that might end up being fortunate for those around her – but that does not mean that there isn’t trouble coming when it comes to what happens next there. Plus, in some fun news, a familiar face is returning for the new season.
As OUAT Season 4 ended, in order to save Regina from the Darkness, Emma took it on (and in), and as her friends and family watched, disappeared, leaving behind the Dark One’s dagger – with a new name inscribed on it: Emma Swan. Teasing the introduction of Camelot was the Apprentice telling them they had to find Merlin to stop the Darkness. (Merlin is just one of several new characters coming in with the introduction of Camelot.)
ABC has posted a sneak peek from the new season teasing what happens right after Emma disappears, leaving the dagger behind, and amidst the discussion of what it means and whether she’s still good, Hook tries to summon her using the dagger. When Emma doesn’t appear, Regina explains why: “She’s not in this world.”

While what to expect from the Dark Swan, as she’s come to be called, may be a bit of a wild card, co-creator Adam Horowitz told TVLine that “there’s a real driving force behind what Emma is doing and why.”
“Emma [before] was a very smart person who did things for a reason, and that translates. It’s not a rampant evil that’s been unleashed.”
But don’t let out a sigh of relief just yet, because that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be worried about what Emma might do as the Dark One, as co-creator Eddy Kitsis previewed, “Emma is going to do something particularly bad and to the people she loves.”
In happier news, Kitsis went on to tease, “I hope there’s a full moon this year. You never know who might come out …” and that could only mean one thing: Ruby is coming back.
In fact, TVLine confirmed later that Meghan Ory will be back for multiple Once Upon a Time Season 5A episodes. Ruby was last seen in the Season 3 finale during (mostly) happier times in Storybrooke.
Finally, Hollywood Life has posted a promo for the new season, and it teases the introduction of Camelot (with King Arthur and more), Merida, “the fight to control [Emma’s] darkness” and Zelena using her magic on Hook in her cell.
Once Upon a Time Season 5 premieres Sunday, September 27 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
