Clinton Apologizes For Using Private Email
Hillary Clinton has offered a public apology on ABC News for using a private email while acting as Secretary of State. Clinton said, “I’m sorry that it has, you know, raised all of these questions. I do take responsibility for having made what is clearly not the best decision,” while speaking with ABC News‘ David Muir. However, Clinton also stated that what she did “was allowed and there was no hiding it.”
The use of private email servers by Clinton was reported back in March by the New York Times, raising questions of the legality of her actions. 55,000 pages of emails where turned over to the State Department by advisers for Mrs. Clinton, as the department made efforts to meet federal record-keeping standards. Clinton is not the first government official to use private email servers for government business; however, she is the only one known to have exclusively used such servers without ever having an actual government email established. The fear expressed by many is not merely one of proper record-keeping, but that Clinton may have shared sensitive information that could have been easily accessed by an outside source.
Mrs. Clinton has stated many times that no sensitive information that could jeopardize national security was shared, and that she is trying to be as helpful with this issue as possible, but the damage may have already been done. This scandal has been used as rhetoric fuel for Republican candidates looking to make a name for themselves by attacking Clinton amidst her 2016 presidential campaign. It has also caused some level of mistrust by those who had formerly been Clinton supporters, and has contributed to declining poll numbers for Clinton against a charismatic Bernie Sanders. The Inquisitr News recently reported that Clinton has been edged out by Sanders in New Hampshire by nine points in the most recent polls, and has dipped dramatically in Iowa as well.
Clinton has been a target for many Republicans ever since accusations were leveled against her for misconduct in the Benghazi attack, and this scandal has added to troubles for Clinton. Many Republican candidates seem to have lost interest in the Clinton email scandal, however, as they surge to rally behind Kim Davis in an effort to put forward the narrative of a “war on Christianity.” With Davis being jailed for contempt of court after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, the use of private email servers by Clinton seems to have become old news for the Republican party.
