NFL Rumors: Washington Redskins Teammates Trash Robert Griffin III
It has been an eventful week for Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins. Griffin found out that he won’t be the opening day starter and as soon as that news broke rumors started swirling that Griffin would be released. Those rumors did not prove to be true as Griffin made it through the final round of cuts and he will be the backup to starter Kirk Cousins. ESPN reported why head coach Jay Gruden kept Robert on the roster.
“We kept him because we thought he was one of our top 53 guys. He’s a quarterback that’s young and talented and done some great things.”
News of Griffin staying with Washington didn’t prevent some fellow Redskins from putting him on blast. TMZ is reporting that some of Griffin’s teammates anonymously took potshots at the quarterback.
“Now we can start winning games.”
“We’re relieved. This is good for the team.”
“The team is excited with the change. We are all looking forward to Kirk leading us this season.”
First of all if you are going say something about a guy on your team at least have the guts to sign your name to it. The fact that these players hide behind anonymity says much more about them than it does about Griffin. Second, these things should really be kept in-house. Lastly, is it really intelligent to insult a guy who is just one bad play away from running your team. If Cousins suffers in injury the offense will fall on the shoulders of RG3 so maybe building him up instead of tearing him down would be a better choice.
It is unclear if the choice to keep Griffin around came from Gruden or from the front office. Rumors of Robert being dealt started circulating last week. Gruden told the Washington Times that he didn’t know of any trade talks involving Griffin.
“I haven’t heard anything of that sort. All I know is we made decisions on our 53-man roster. He’s one of our 53. That’s all we’re going by now. We’re going to get all our guys ready to play.”
As of right now, Griffin is still on the sidelines because he hasn’t been cleared to play after suffering a concussion during the pre-season. RG3 is scheduled to see the neurologist on Tuesday. The neurologist who didn’t clear Griffin last week has since resigned.
We will have to wait and see if Robert Griffin III ever hits the field again for the Washington Redskins, but some of his teammates have already made their opinions quite clear on the situation. Those opinions just add gasoline to an already raging fire.
