Oklahoma High School Scandal: Coach Arrested For Having Intercourse With 15-Year-Old Student

An Oklahoma high school assistant basketball coach has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old student.

Byron McDonald, 24, was arrested at Guthrie High School and escorted off the campus by Logan County Deputies on Friday morning, according to News 9.

The scandalous relationship was revealed when a few students from the Oklahoma high school became aware of the relationship between McDonald and the 15-year-old student.

According to News 9, McDonald had sexual intercourse with the teenager at least once inside her own home.

Jessica Craymore, the mother of a 14-year-old student at the Oklahoma high school, told News 9 she was enraged.

“Sex once, it don’t matter. That’s one too many.”

Her daughter, Nova, said, “I see him around like in the hallways and at assembly’s and stuff.”

“He just seems normal. He seems like any other teacher really.”

McDonald was hired as an assistant basketball coach and a teacher’s assistant in the in-school suspension program in mid-August, according to KOCO 5 News.

News 9 reports that district administrators were notified Thursday night about the incident by a resource officer at the Oklahoma high school who was told of the incident. The school resource officer is also a sheriff’s deputy.

Detective Greg Valencia of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office said McDonald and the 15-year-old had been communicating via social media for months. The conversations eventually became sexual.

“Through the course of our investigation, preliminary investigation, we determined that we did have probable cause to arrest,” he said.

“There was at least one incident where this gentleman went into the student’s home and did have intercourse in her home.”

Court documents showed that McDonald admitted going to the Oklahoma high school student’s home three times during his interview at the sheriff’s office. It was on the third visit that he and the 15-year-old had sexual intercourse.

According to KFOR 4, McDonald was arrested on charges of first-degree rape, rape by instrumentation, and forcible sodomy on a child under the age of 16.

Dr. Mike Simpson, Superintendent of Guthrie Public School, released the following statement:

“Guthrie Public Schools administration was notified late last night about an inappropriate relationship between Guthrie High School paraprofessional Byron ‘B.J.’ McDonald and a high school student. We immediately notified law enforcement and are cooperating fully with the investigation.”

“Following a background check, Mr. McDonald began employment with the district on August 14, 2015. He worked as a Paraprofessional in the In-School Suspension Program at Guthrie High School and as an Assistant Boys Basketball Coach. McDonald volunteered the previous school year as an Assistant Basketball Coach. Mr. McDonald was terminated today, September 4, 2015.”

“Guthrie Public Schools is committed to the safety and security of all students. We want to assure parents that we do not tolerate this behavior and stand committed to support in the
prosecution of anyone engaged in inappropriate behavior with our students.”

The Oklahoma high school coach was fired on Friday. Both his and the 15-year-old high school student’s cell phones have been confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation.
