Giada De Laurentiis: Food Network Star Isn’t The First Celebrity To Pay Dearly For Failing To Sign A Prenup

Giada De Laurentiis is paying dearly for failing to sign a prenup.

The Food Network star just finalized her divorce from husband Todd Thompson more than a year after they separated. The couple will share custody of their 7-year-old daughter, Jade Marie, but Giada will be footing the bill for the girl. The divorce settlement stipulated that she pat $9,000 a month in child support.

As People magazine reported, the lack of a prenup also means that Giada De Laurentiis will have to dish out a lot of money from her earnings.

“Thompson, a fashion designer, gets to keep the couple’s $3.2 million house in Pacific Palisades, California, and because there was no prenup, De Laurentiis must give him 50 percent of all net book royalties for books she published during their marriage and 50 percent of the unpaid advances to several cookbooks that she has in the works (more than $5 million). Neither of them have been ordered to pay spousal support.”

Giada De Laurentiis is not the first celebrity to be hit hard by passing over a prenup. When actor Kelsey Grammer divorced his third wife, Camille, she went after half of his estimated $120 million fortune. Even though the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star was certainly well off in her own right, the failure to sign a prenup meant Kelsey had to dish out 50 percent of his earnings.

Not every celebrity who skips the prenup gets burned for it, however. When pop star Katy Perry married comedian Russell Brand in 2010, they decided not to ink a prenup agreement. But when Brand filed for divorce a little more than a year later, he skipped the chance to take half of her $55 million fortune.

“I’ve got a good job. All I want to do is live a good life,” Brand said at the time (via The Richest). “I’m not into taking money from women.”

For De Laurentiis, there could be other factors complicating her divorce. There have been long-running rumors that she has been having an affair with fellow celebrity chef Bobby Flay, though she has vehemently denied the reports. Flay, who is caught up in his own messy divorce from Law & Order star Stephanie March, has not addressed the rumors.

It appears that Giada De Laurentiis is moving on from her divorce and costly settlement, Radar Online reported. She has been spotted making out with another man — who witnesses said was definitely not Bobby Flay — during a night out in Manhattan.
