‘Destiny: The Taken King’ Crucible Preview Open To All On Tuesday
Destiny owners will be treated to a special preview of the new Crucible multiplayer modes and maps coming with The Taken King expansion a week early. Bungie announced all PlayStation and Xbox owners of the shooter will be able to take new expansion multiplayer content for a spin.
The Destiny 2.0 update will be released on Tuesday, September 8, and will make many of the gameplay and quality of life updates to the game available a week before the launch of The Taken King on September 15. This includes the Crucible Preview Event which will run through the launch of the expansion. Only The Taken King owners will be able to play the new Crucible maps and modes once the expansion goes live.
“If you’ve bought Destiny, whether you’ve pre-ordered The Taken King or not, we’re sending you into the Crucible to experience new modes of battle on every brand new map,” Community Manager David “Deej” Dague wrote in the Bungie Weekly Update. “One thing to note: You won’t have the use of your new Super abilities yet. You’ll have to visit your class Vanguard in The Taken King to earn your new subclass. For now, though, you can and should check out the new slate of maps on offer, and two of the new modes.”
That means Guardians will only be able to bring their existing weapons and sub-classes into Crucible Preview.

Rift is a 6-vs.-6 objective gametype similar to a neutral bomb assault mode. Players pick up a ball of energy in the center of the map and must “dunk” it in an energy rift in the opposing team’s base. Bungie will reward players with points for only making it part way, but there’s a death penalty if you hold on to the ball too long and let the timer countdown to zero.
Meanwhile, Mayhem is exactly like its name sounds. This is another 6-vs.-6 mode with increased grenade and super ability generation.
The third new mode, Zone Control, won’t be available during the Crucible Preview Event. It is similar to Call of Duty’s Domination mode though with a team needing to capture control of three zones on the map. Points are earned by holding on to these zones though and not by getting kills.
These are the maps that are coming with Destiny: The Taken King and will be available during the Crucible Preview Event. Note that Sector 618 is a PlayStation exclusive and thus will only be available for the PS4 and PS3.
- Ghost Ship
- Memento
- Vertigo
- Bannerfall
- Exile
- Crossroads
- Frontier
- Sector 618 (PlayStation exclusive)
The Crucible Preview Event should be an excellent way to test out the new weapon balancing changes that are coming with the Destiny 2.0 update along with the Blink-Shotgun nerf. How bounties are being handled will be changed with the update; starting with the ability to carry 16. Don’t expect new bounties just yet, however.
Will you give the Crucible Preview Event a try when Destiny is updated next Tuesday? Sound off in the comments below.
