Jackie Chan: I’m Done With Action Movies, I Want To Be Asian Robert De Niro
Jackie Chan announced on Friday at the Cannes press conference for his 100th movie, Chinese Zodiac, that he will no longer be doing action movies.
Chan, who is now 58 years old, told reporters at the festival that Chinese Zodiac will be his last action movie, according to US Weekly:
“This will be my last action movie. I will ask my body how long I can go . . . I tell you, I am not young any more…I am really, really tired.”
The international Hong Kong born action star is best known for his films in mixing martial arts and comedy, as well as doing his own stunts.
Jackie also states one of the reasons for trying to get out of the action side of things is because he does not like the violent side being shown in today’s movies, telling reporters:
“The world is too violent now. It’s a dilemma because I like action, but I don’t like the violence.”
Just because he’s no longer doing action films don’t think Jackie Chan is done with movies entirely. Chan hopes he can focus on expanding his career and show all Chan fans “the real Jackie Chan.” He’d like to take on more serious and dramatic acting roles.
“I don’t just want to be an action star, I want to be a true actor. I want to be an Asian Robert De Niro. I want to get rid of my image. So, for the last ten years I’ve done other films like The Karate Kid, where I’d rather play an old man. I want the audience to know I’m not just about fighting or comedy, also I can act.”
Jackie Chan currently holds the Guinness Book of World Records title for “Most Stunts By A Living Actor.”
