‘Miley Cyrus And Her Dead Petz’: Singer Discusses New Project, Wayne Coyne Friendship

Miley Cyrus surprised her fans with a new album. The wacky pop star performed her new song, “Dooo It!”, at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. At the end of her performance, she asked her fans to stream her new album, Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz.

Miley Cyrus’ new album was available for free on multiple websites. The 22-year-old former Disney star spoke to the New York Times about her new project, including working with The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. Just because Cyrus’ new album is free of charge doesn’t mean it was cheaply made. According to the article, it was made on a budget of $50,000.

Miley told the New York Times that she loves working with Wayne Coyne and insists their relationship is nothing but strictly business.

“[Coyne is] everything in the world – you can’t even define us. I am 100 percent in love with Wayne, and Wayne is in love with me, but it’s nothing sexual in any way. That would be the grossest.”

Cyrus and Coyne began working together when the former pop tart lent her vocals to “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” off the Flaming Lips’ Sgt. Pepper’s tribute album, With a Little Help From My Fwends. Cyrus’ dog, Floyd, was killed by coyotes while the singer was on her Bangerz World Tour in April of 2014. That tragedy led Cyrus being hospitalized due to an allergic reaction to medication. Coyne visited Cyrus numerous times in the hospital, which led to their friendship and musical collaboration.

The reason why Miley’s new album is free of charge is because it was made outside of her record contract with RCA Records, which allowed her complete artistic freedom over the new project. Miley also added that the new EP won’t count towards her multi-album contract with RCA.

According to a recent article via the Guardian, the “Wrecking Ball” singer uses this new album to talk about love (and loss), sex, drugs, and death, with her newfound trippy and psychedelic spirit. Fans can tell that this new work is nothing like Cyrus’ previous albums. You can hear Wayne Coyne’s production on the Dead Petz album. The Flaming Lips frontman shares production credits along with Mike Will Made It, Cyrus’ former collaborator and producer on her RCA record, Bangerz.

Miley simply added: “What Mike was to Bangerz, Wayne is to this project.”

“When I made Bangerz, it was true to me then as this record is now. It just happened naturally in my head. It’s like anything – styles just change.”

Although Cyrus shows off her weird sense of humor and love for marijuana on Instagram, she insists that she would rather stay at home than go out and party. She says that spends most of her days at home doing yoga, making art or music, playing with her pets (and baby pig), and of course, smoking weed.

She’s always very aware of her wild Instagram persona, however — she insists she doesn’t do it for shock value. “I put naked pictures on my Instagram – I don’t care. It’s not interesting anymore to see me like that.”

What does Miley think of her pop contemporary, Taylor Swift? She’s already criticized the country-turned-pop singer for her “Bad Blood” music video. In the new issue of Marie Claire, Miley said that the public is more scared of “t***ies” than guns. Now, Miley has more to say about America’s Sweetheart.

“I’m not trying to be in the squad. None of my friends are famous and not because of any other reason than I just like real people who are living real lives, because I’m inspired by them.”

In addition to releasing her new project, Miley Cyrus also premiered her trippy new video for “Dooo It!” after the 2015 MTV VMAs.
