‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Spoilers: Major Changes For Season 12 Teased
Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 will be filled with changes. With the death of Derek Shepherd at the end of last season, the series will take on a new life as Meredith Grey tries to adjust to her post-Derek existence.
Just Jared shared the latest photos of Grey’s Anatomy star, Ellen Pompeo, on Sunday. The actress was seen out in Los Angeles, and she is not silent about the difficulties Meredith will face when the series returns to ABC next month.
What does Ellen Pompeo have to say about the upcoming season of Grey’s Anatomy?
“It feels a lot different. Every time we lose someone big — when we lost Sandra Oh — when we lose anybody — it’s a big shift. But a show that runs this long, you welcome those big changes. It makes everything feel so much different and that’s what we’re looking for in season 12. We’re looking for things to not stay the same. They have to stay the same to some extent but you welcome change because that’s what inspires the writers, that’s what inspires the actors. Change is necessary for growth.”
The cast has been back to work for more than a month now, and there is a different feeling on the set as well. That has to do with the lighter tone of the series. Early seasons of the ABC drama had a much lighter feel to them. There was great dialogue and banter between the interns on the series. Those interns grew up, and only two remain now – Meredith Grey and Alex Karev.
Shonda Rhimes talked about the lighter tone of the upcoming season in a recent interview, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“We had a table read last week in which I have never heard the entire room laugh that much — I want to say since season one — the entire room was laughing and everybody broke into applause when we were done reading. It was a nice feeling to be so light again but in a way that didn’t feel like we were trying so hard; it felt natural. I missed the banter and the fun of [Season 1]. I missed their quickness and lightness. Meredith being a widow, surprisingly, should be funny in some ways. She’s been a woman who has been off the market forever and that humor of ‘I’m dead inside, I’m not interested in men,’ should be funny in a way. She should have some darker humor in that feeling.”
Meredith is not the only character that will experience major changes this season. Every single character will redefine themselves in some way. This means that Amelia will need to figure out who she is without Derek looking over her shoulder. The two always had a competitive nature to them, and his death takes that away from her.
As for Alex Karev, he is still around, and Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 will be his time to stand up and have a spotlight shined on him as his relationship. Shonda Rhimes has revealed to TV Line that fans will see more of Alex and Jo’s relationship next season.
The pair ended Season 11 with a major decision about their future. They will buy a new place to live together. Shonda Rhimes revealed that, “We had a lot of stories we wanted to tell with them last season, and I promised the fans, ‘We’re going to tell all these Alex and Jo stories.’ And then we had to take a left turn because Patrick [Dempsey] was leaving. And now we want to tell a lot of those stories — except in a lighter way. So there’s a real focus on them this season. I feel like we didn’t get to know Jo the way we should, and Alex is sort of a grown man now; it’s time to watch that happen.”
