‘Avengers’ Passes $1 Billion Mark In Just 19 Days
The Avengers has been in theaters for less than three weeks but the Marvel super hero movie has already grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.
According to the Associated Press, the new superhero flick starring Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth, brought in another $103.2 million this weekend. The movie also scored $95.4 million this weekend overseas to bring its grand total to just over $1 billion.
Robert A. Iger, Disney’s Chairman and CEO, said:
“We’re obviously thrilled with the global success of ‘The Avengers.’ It’s a fantastic movie and an extraordinary franchise that will continue with more great stories and compelling characters for years to come.”
The new Marvel movie needed just 19 days to pass the $1 billion mark and now sits just outside of the top ten highest grossing movies of all-time. The Avengers, which had a budget of $220 million, was the fastest movie to hit $200 million, the fastest to hit $300 million, and has now set the ticket sales speed record by grossing more than $1 billion in just 19 days.
The Avengers hit $1 billion faster than Avatar, but James Cameron’s epic is still at the top of the movie world. Cameron’s Avatar brought in $2.7 billion, so The Avengers still has a way to go to reach the top.
