K-Pop Idol Yoona, Of Girls’ Generation, And Lee Seung Gi Break Up! Fans Speculate Seung Gi’s Upcoming Military Service Is The Cause

So far, 2015 has been a great year for new Korean celebrity relationships either confirmed or rumored. This includes K-pop icons pairing up with K-drama stars or the male and female leads of famous K-dramas turning their on-screen romance into a reality. An example of the former would be Kim Soo Hyun, the actor who starred in Producer, rumored to be dating Sandara Park of 2NE1. As for the latter, main co-stars of Pinocchio, Park Shin Hye and Lee Jong Suk, are also rumored to be dating.

The aforementioned couples are just two of the many rumored or confirmed new Korean celebrity relationships that began this year. Unfortunately, it is debilitating to learn that one of the most famous celebrity couples have broken up within the midst of all these new couples. Lee Seung Gi and Yoona, of K-pop group Girls’ Generation, are confirmed to have broken up.

SM Entertainment confirmed the split of Lee Seung Gi and Yoona recently, as reported by KdramaStars. They made an official statement, published in Korean news outlet OSEN.

“Yoona and Lee Seung Gi have broken up. They have decided to stay on good terms.”

Prior to breaking up, Lee Seung Gi and Yoona had been dating since October of 2013. Their relationship however wasn’t made public until New Year’s Day 2014, after pictures of both of them walking along a sidewalk were released to the public.

Reportedly, the reasons given for Lee Seung Gi and Yoona’s breakup were their schedules being both busy and conflicting. Yoona was acting in Chinese period drama God of War Zhao Yun. Afterwards, she jumped right into promoting Lion Heart, the fifth studio album of Girls’ Generation. Seung Gi has also been busy with his upcoming K-pop album. Also, he is currently acting in the upcoming K-movie, Love Forecast. In short, neither one of them have the time to invest in one another.

Though the provided reasons both Lee Seung Gi and Yoona gave are valid for why they broke up, fans speculate there is another reason why they are no more. According to KpopStarz, fans believe Seung Gi’s upcoming mandatory military service is the the reason for their breakup. In South Korea’s military conscription, all males have to enlist in the military for a minimum of two years between the ages of 18 and 35. Given the fact Seung Gi is 28, this is probably the time he should get his military duties done.

Whatever the reason for Lee Seung Gi and Yoona breaking up might be, it is just sad that one of South Korea’s most popular celebrity couples is no more.

At least it was amicable.
