CL Of K-Pop Group 2NE1 Collaborates With Diplo, RiFF RAFF, And OG Maco For American Single ‘Doctor Pepper’ [Video]
Over the last couple of years, many K-pop acts have tried to break into the American music industry due to the booming popularity of the genre itself. The first to attempt such a feat were Wonder Girls with “Nobody” and Girls’ Generation with “The Boys.” Though both songs have garnered success, they didn’t exactly break any musical barriers either. Eventually, it would be Psy who would break the musical barrier with his phenomenal hit song, “Gangnam Style.”
Because of Psy, a K-pop idol’s accessibility into the American music industry became easier. In one such case, Lee Chae Rin — better known as CL of 2NE1 — is working on her first solo album and it will release in the American market. To help promote her debut, CL made an amazing live debut at the Ultra Music Festival 2015. Now, CL has released a music video titled “Doctor Pepper,” and it is getting a lot of attention.
According to KpopStarz, the official YouTube channel for Mad Decent, the record label Diplo owns, uploaded the music video of “Doctor Pepper” on Friday, August 14, 2015. The slow rap track done by CL is accompanied by RiFF RAFF and OC Maco. The music video is attached below for viewing. Please note it has profanity and some PG-13 sexual situations.
The song was originally released back in May 22, 2015, right after a tense moment happened between CL and Diplo, as reported by The Fader. Apparently, Diplo missed a recording session with CL which made her quite mad, something she verifies in an official statement made at the source.
“Diplo canceled a session on me and I was so mad at him. I was drinking a can of Dr. Pepper and wrote the song so I could go home as soon as possible. Diplo ended up loving it.”
As of the publication of this article, CL’s “Doctor Pepper” music video has been viewed over 800,000 times. A little above 41,000 people like the video. Yet, it has its share of dislikes and criticism, especially from those who expected CL’s solo performance to be similar to that of her role in 2NE1.
Presently, it is unknown when CL’s American debut album will release. However, it is known that CL will release it before she returns to 2NE1, something that was made known by YG Entertainment themselves.
