Yankees Trade Rumors: Jose Reyes Coming To New York In Trade With Colorado Rockies?
Yankees trade rumors are surface again. The latest New York Yankees trade rumors link the team to Jose Reyes, a shortstop that could potentially give the team a big boost on offense down the stretch. A report from CBS Sports on Friday morning (Aug. 14) states that Reyes has cleared waivers, meaning the Colorado Rockies can now trade him to any other franchise in baseball. This was expected to happen, because Reyes is owed quite a bit of money by the Rockies for the next few MLB seasons.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the Rockies acquired Reyes as part of a multi-player deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. The team had looked to part with All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to improve its system, and was able to bring back Reyes as part of the trade. The Rockies obviously have some interest in dealing him now, as the front office placed him on waivers to explore all options. No teams claimed him, most likely because of his huge salary.
Through the 2017 MLB season, Jose Reyes will make $22 million a year. He also has a team option of $22 million for the 2018 season. The fresh New York Yankees trade rumors don’t suggest that the team is very worried about spending the money on him, but general manager Brian Cashman hasn’t weighed in publicly yet either. It’s definitely possible that he is worried about increasing the payroll by that much money when the team needs to address some other positions during the next MLB offseason.
In his first 13 games for the Rockies, Reyes has posted a.216 batting average (11-for-51) and just three extra base hits. He has also been caught stealing (3 times) more times than he has been successful at it (2 times). Those numbers are an extremely small sample size, but it shows that fans in Colorado certainly aren’t enamored by the former All-Star shortstop just yet. Replacing one of the most beloved players in franchise history (Troy Tulowitzki) cannot be an easy process either.
After the Yankees fell out of first place and the Toronto Blue Jays took over the American League East, it appeared that there might be some movement in the trade market very soon. Now that a prized player like Jose Reyes has cleared waivers and have become available, it wouldn’t surprise any MLB analysts if he were on the move. Colorado isn’t desperate to move Reyes, but could certainly jump at the chance to move him if the right offer came along. Now there are going to many New York Yankees trade rumors about the team working to get Reyes, with a deadline of August 31 in place to make a deal.
