Gingrich to Romney: Don’t Pick Me As Vice President
Washington, D.C. — Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has some advice for former Republican Primary rival about his choice for a running mate to face President Obama. Gingrich says not to pick him.
Gingrich told Face the Nation on Sunday,
“You have known me a long time. would you pick me to be presidential vice president nominee? It would be inconceivable.”
Gingrich and Romney just got done fighting a bruising fight for the Republican presidential nomination. While Romney hasn’t been nominated yet all of his opponents except Texas Congressman Ron Paul have dropped out of the race. Gingrich originally garnered most of his support around the concept that he was Romney’s conservative alternative. Polls routinely showed that it was not because people actually supported Gingrich but were unhappy with Romney as a candidate. The two went after each other pretty hard in the primary.
While there is no real love lost between Gingrich and Romney, Gingrich told CNN he would be out on the stump to drum up support for Romney to defeat President Obama. Gingrich said,
“We’re talking about several dates and several major events we’re going to do together. I have said to the campaign I will be available at their convenience to do anything they want me to do because they’re in charge. This is their campaign. They’ve got to win it. And I have got to be there as an associate, but I’m not the leader. Mitt Romney is the leader.”
Gingrich did have a lot to say about who Romney should consider for Vice President.
Gingrich told CNN,
“I think Romney is going to look for somebody who is younger. I think he’s got somebody like Kelly Ayotte in New Hampshire, Rob Portman, Marco Rubio. You look at a Susana Martinez, Bobby Jindal, or you look at somebody like Mitch Daniel. We have a really — we have a big, deep bench now.”
