WWE News: Rey Mysterio Gives Tell-All Interview — Reveals Real Reason He Left WWE And Speaks On Perro Aguayo’s Death
For a long time, Rey Mysterio hadn’t been seen in WWE even though he was still employed by the company. There were a lot of backstage rumors dealing with injuries, contracts, deal, and more. Now, as Mysterio gets ready to face Mysteziz (Sin Cara in WWE) at AAA Triplemania on Sunday, he is speaking out on a number of topics, including why he left WWE and the death of Perro Aguayo Jr.
Triplemania XXIII is the first AAA Pay-Per-View that is going to be shown in America since Mysterio broke onto the scene at “When Worlds Collide” back in 1994. Rolling Stone did the interview with Mysterio, where he talks about a lot of things, such as his career coming full circle and reestablishing AAA as a true wrestling promotion.
A number of other big topics were on the table though, and one of them was why Rey Mysterio wanted out of WWE. His reasoning isn’t for any of the big dramatics that many of the rumors said about him, though.
“Family was the biggest reason. If anything, I’ll probably do appearances. I’m not trying to stay busy. I’m trying to enjoy my time at home and be around my kids. I want to vacation. I’m a big family guy. I want to do more with them. That was the primary reason that I stepped away. Opportunities are starting to arise. After 15 years, I didn’t know what was out there. I had been wrestling with WWE all that time and wasn’t focusing on anything outside of that. I’m realizing that there’s a lot of opportunities there. The question is just whether I want to take them.”
During the interview, Mysterio talks about a number of things, and that included his good friend, the late Eddie Guerrero. There was one feud in particular that brought Mysterio’s sons into the picture, and it was a very deep storyline dealing with personal issues and family.
While a number of critics and fans thought it was distasteful, Mysterio said he loved the feud and that it was Eddie’s idea to start. He enjoyed being able to work with his sons and also having a storyline go “that deep and emotional.”
Another strong topic that was brought up in the interview was the death of Perro Aguayo Jr. Mysterio was actually in the ring when the wrestler died from injuries sustained during the match.
Mysterio doesn’t take any of the blame on himself as a lot of people have tried to do, but he did speak on the situation.
“It was horrible. There’s no moving past it. You can’t leave it behind you. You just have to live with it. You hear stories on the road of terrible things happening in the ring. You never imagine that it would happen to you. It was just like a nightmare. You always imagine the worst. A shoulder injury, a neck injury – you never imagine death. There was nothing we could do. God said it was his time, and it was his time. I was just praying and praying, because it didn’t look good. But you can’t do anything when God says it’s time for you to go.”
Rey Mysterio has had a storied wrestling career that has spanned decades and gone through numerous promotions. He is said to be on good terms with WWE, and a return to the company isn’t necessarily out of the question, but for now, he is a huge part of AAA and could maybe join Lucha Underground in the future.
