Anti-Abortion Group ‘Operation Rescue’ Claims Clinic Not Reporting Sex Abuse, Records Taken From Clinic Dumpster

The anti-abortion group Operation Rescue is claiming Kansas City clinic Central Family Medicine, also known as Aid for Women, has not been reporting child sexual abuse.

According to Operation Rescue, the group has “bits and pieces” of the confidential records of 86 patients (women and girls) to back it up. The information the group claims to have includes patients’ names, addresses, phone numbers and information about sonograms, that were delivered to its office in Wichita two weeks ago by a confidential informant.

Among the documents are reports from CFM that show the forms are pre-printed to include a “No” answer in a question on the form asking if a report of suspected abuse was filed.

In addition to the incriminating forms, Operation Rescue also released redacted samples of other sensitive private medical information related to abortions on the 86 women during the single month of April, 2012.

Central Family Medicine, which provides first-trimester abortions and other family-planning services, is contending the allegations are false and stating any information the group may have in its possession was stolen from a locked dumpster where files are stored for destruction. The clinic’s attorney Cheryl Pilate contacted local police and the FBI on Monday after a witness reported seeing someone break into the dumpster last week. Security cameras show that a pickup pulled up to the full dumpster and shows two people at the bin reports the Kansas City Star.

Operation Rescue’s senior policy adviser Cheryl Sullenger, however, says the clinic “cavalierly discarded” the records and defends any allegations that her group broke any laws.

Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue and Pro-Life Nation stated on the group’s website:

“The State of Kansas owes former Attorney General Phill Kline a huge apology. It turns out his investigations of abortion clinics for not reporting child sex abuse was completely justified, according to documents we now have in our possession.

“We call on Attorney General Derek Schmidt to reopen Kline’s abortion clinic investigation to ensure that young women and girls are protected from sex abuse. Right now, clinics like Central Family Medical are ignoring possible abuse and are handing victims back to their accusers for more abuse, just like these same people did in the Estrada case in Wichita a few years ago.”
