It’s Official! One Direction Is The UK’s ‘Gayest’ Band

Boy-band One Direction has been on the music scene for five years now. Ever since they first appeared on Simon Cowell’s reality TV show, X-Factor, the gossip columns have had a seemingly endless fascination with the love lives of One Direction’s members. As a result, One Direction is constant gossip fodder, and the constant speculation over who is dating who must become extremely tiring for the four young men who make up the band.

The hunger for One Direction gossip arguably began when it was revealed that Harry Styles, who was then just 17-years-old, was dating Caroline Flack, a woman almost twice his age. Since then, Harry has picked up a reputation as One Direction’s Lothario, but barely a day passes without the gossip columns running stories about who Styles or his One Direction band-mates, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, or Liam Payne, are dating.

In the past, there have been suggestions that members of One Direction are gay or bi-sexual, and that members of the band are in relationships with each other. Earlier this year, it was reported in Inquisitr that the internet went crazy after a video clip was circulated that appeared to feature Louis Tomlinson saying “I’m gay. It’s pretty unfortunate.” Of course, Louis had not actually said anything of the sort. He had said that it was unfortunate that a fan shared his birthday on Christmas Eve.

However, a report in Pink News claims that a U.K. government survey has shown that One Direction are the UK’s “gayest” band. The survey by YouGov reveals that, “among adult fans, One Direction is the music act with the strongest correlation to gay men.”

The survey sampled 200,000 people and compared British men who identify as gay to the rest of the population and pulled out the music artists that are most disproportionately popular among them. The results show that One Direction has now surpassed Kylie Minogue and Madonna to become the band met with the most enthusiasm by the UK’s gay community.

The Gay UK reports that the survey results don’t necessarily show that One Direction are the most popular act within the British gay community, but rather that they are the artists that are most overrepresented when compared to the straight community. The most popular musician amongst Britain’s gay community was Sam Smith, who is himself gay. Other acts named in the “gayest” top 10 include the Pet Shop Boys, Eurythmics, and Lady Gaga.

One Direction has not made any comment about the results of the survey.
