Russian Sub Found Off Coast Of Sweden?

A Russian sub found in wreckage of the coast of Sweden rumors hit the internet on Tuesday morning. The submarine wreck discovery may date back to World War 1. Speculations has emerged that the find could be debris from a Russian submersible which was “hunted” in the area last year.

A Russian submarine was believed to have been sighted near Stockholm almost one year ago. The submersible was a “mini sub.” The wreckage was found about 1.5 nautical miles off the coast of Sweden. Military officials in Sweden noted in a statement that the sub wreckage was probably from a 1916 incident, where a Russian watercraft and a Swedish ship collided when visibility was poor. All 18 ship crew members were reportedly killed in the crash.

Ocean X Team, a shipwreck hunting team, shared underwater footage of the submarine wreckage with the Swedish military. The letters on the hull of the sub indicated to the divers that the watercraft was definitely Russian. The dive team also said that it is not currently possible to determine how long the Russian sub has been sitting on the ocean floor.

“I am 99.9 percent sure it’s from 1916, but the next step is to go down again and confirm it,” Ocean X Team member Dennis Asberg stated, during an interview with Reuters.

“Judging by the pictures, it is the Som,” Russian state wreck team divers head, Konstanin Bogdanov, said, after viewing images of the Cyrillic lettering on the shell of the submarine found in the wreckage. Bogdanov also noted that his team of Russian divers is willing to study the wreckage alongside Swedish divers. “We are ready to conduct a joint expedition.” The dive team leader also stated that if the sub wreckage is indeed from the Catfish, Russia feels it would be important to also “immortalize the memory” of those who died and lay in the watery grave.

As tensions have increased between Russian and the West, concerns about Russian submarines and aircraft have enhanced, as well. During the Cold War era, the Swedish navy reportedly chased Soviet submarines away from the coast with “depth charges” on multiple occasions.

The “Whiskey on the Rocks,” incident occurred in 1981. A Russian “Whiskey-class” sub was reportedly stranded near a Swedish naval base after running around. A diplomatic standoff ensued, but military action was averted between the two nations.
