2012 Tony Awards Nominees: ‘Once’ Leads With 11 Nominations


Irish musical Once is in the lead with 11 Tony Award nominations after Tuesday’s announcement in New York at the 2012 Tony Awards.

Close in second place were both Nice Work If You Can Get It and The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which both maintained 10 nominations each. Next comes Peter and the Starcatcher, up for nine awards. Follies and Newsies both have eight nominations. Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman and One Man, Two Guvnors have both been nominated for seven categories.

Nominees for Best Revival of a Play are Master Class, Wit, Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical nominees consist of Jeremy Jordan for Newsies, Steve Kazee for Once, Danny Burstein as well as Ron Raines for Follies, and Norm Lewis for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess.

Moving onto Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, we have Audra McDonald for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Jan Maxwell for Follies, Laura Osnes for Bonnie & Clyde, Kelli O’Hara for Nice Work If You Can Get It, and Cristin Milioti for Once.

The competition for the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play consists of Frank Langella for Man and Boy, John Lithgow for The Columnist, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, James Earl Jones for Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, and James Corden for One Man, Two Guvnors.

The 66th annual Tony Awards, honoring the best in Broadway theater for the year, will be broadcast live from New York’s Beacon Theatre on June 10 on CBS. Neil Patrick Harris will, for the third time, serve as host for the 2012 Tony Awards.
